Charles Marvin, the authority on Russia in Asia and petroleum, is dead, : Sir Barries Peacock was a member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, to which he was appointed in 1872. He-bad previously been Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Calcutta, Vice-Preaident of the Legislative Council of India, and Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicatuie of Bengal. He was 80 years of ase.} The late Mr Charles Marvin, whose death is announced in our cable messages tbis morning, had in some respects a remarkable career. His name had lately acquired especial interest in New Zealand from the fact that he was prominently associated with the Taranaki Petroleum Company promoted by Sir J. Vogel, and it was recently announced that he intended to visit tnis colony. Hβ was bora In 1831, and spent the early part of his life in Bussia. He entered the English Civil service in 1875, and was In the Foreign Office. Considerable sensation was caused by the publication of the Anglo-Russian Agreement, in 1878, in the Globe newspaper, and it being discovered that Mr Marvin had divulged this highly important confidential document, he had to retire from the service. He then devoted himself to literature, and became especially known as an authority on Bussia, Central Asia, and petroleum, especially the Caspian fields.
