ST. MARY'S CHURCH, MERIVALE.
The annual sale of work in connection ! with St. Mary's Church, Merivale, was held in the schoolroom, • Papanui road, yesterday, and passed off most'successfully.' There was a constant stream of vißitore from 'the time the doors were opened at 2 o'clock, and in, the-evening the-building was crowded with those anxious to ese if not to purchase, from the abundant stock of ornamental and useful' article* on view. The whole of the arrangements were admirably carried out uuder the superintendence of. Mrs Gibbs. The ladies presiding at the various stalls were —Ladies' work stall, Mesdatnes Simpson and Garrard; girls' stall, Mesdames Wakelin. and Allan; produce stall, Mesdamea MiUom and Martin; curio stall, MrsGlazebrook;. bran pie, Wakelin and Fisher; refreshments* Mre and Miss Scrivenor.. Those mentioned were assisted by a host of young ladies, and all were kept busily employed during the time the sale; was on. Special mention should be made of a beautiful Christmas tree, presented by the Misses Rhodee, who personally disposed of the dainty articles with which it was hung. The palmistry tent, in which Mrs Delamere told the fortunes of all who submitted their hands to her scrutiny, was extensively patronised. In the evening the Operetta "The Base Queen " was delightfully rendered by the young members of the Merivale Temperance Guild. Before the sale was brought to a close Mr Wm. Black proposed that a very hearty vote of thanks be' accorded to all those who had contributed to the success of the sale. The vote, needless to say, was carried by acclamation. The takings were most satisfactory, and the ladies' feel very gratified at' the generous response that has been made to their efforts.
