MR W. W. TANNER AT PHILLIPS. TOWN.
Mr Tanner addressed a meeting of (he electors of Heathcote at the PhiUipstown schoolroom last night. The building was crowded. Mr L. Berg, Chairman of the Lin wood Town Board, presided. Mr Tannss addressed himself shortly to the various political questions, and in answer to a letter in the Press, he said that he was now, as he always had been, in favor of the maintenance of the present system of education. He spoke at some length, and with a little feeding on the matters of Liberalism and labor, and at the conclusion answered a number, of questions. Several questions he declined to read or answer, as , they were not political. If any alteration were needed to tbe law of Government contracts in the interests of the working people, he was the man to look after it. (Applause.) The question of the greater taxing of pound notes had involved In it that of the State Bank, which ha held could never be brought; about unless the . Government was a more Radical one, besides which other important measures required attention. He knew nothing about trotting clubs, and such ■ questions should be pat to Mr Stead, ne would like to see totalisators abolished, lie read a question which asked if a deputation of bootmakers had refused support to Mr Beeves if the Times did not support Mr Tanner, and in answer said that the whole misunderstanding had arisen through an inaccuracy of his own speech, and the whole thing was based on mere assumption. (Applause, dissent, and cries of " Oh, its the Press ; its the Telegraph,"} In answer to the query if he would be in favor of working men being put on the Justices of the Peace ■ Act, he said the working men had now splendid local selfgovernment, which they did not appreciate. He did think that the attempt of the working classes to get things cheaply tended to reduce their own wages. Applause.) . , ,-,. ■ One elector moved, and another seconded, a vote of. thanks to, and confidence in, Mr Tanner. ■■■ An amendment of thanks only (which was hooted and howied> was not seconded, and upon the motion being put it was carried unanimously. . The meeting closed with thanks to the Chairman* after cheers had been given for the labor candidates.
