CHRISTCHURCH.
The contest for the Mayoralty of Christ church between Messrs Manning and Gray ' yesterday created a considerable amount of excitement, as up to noon a very large number of votes had been recorded at the City Council Chamber. Mr Manning seemed to have secured tbe larger portion of the lady voters, judging from the number brought up in the vehicles running in Mr Mannings interest. The friends of both candidates worked very hard for them. For the first time in tbe municipal history of Christchurch the suburban ratepayers, as represented by the residents of the new ward of Richmond, hud the opportunity of recording their votes in the choice of the Chief Magistrate of the city. The Foresters' Hall, Richmond, was fitted up as a polling place, and so far as could be seen, the ratepayers exercised their privilege pretty ireely. The result, which was unofficially declared at about 7.30 p.m., was the return of Mr C. M. Gray by a majority of 173. The numbers polled for the respective candidates were as under:— CM. Gray ... ... ... 665 S, Manning 482
