SHODDY LIBERALISM.
TO THB EDITOR O? THB PRX3S. ~, Sm,—Day after day the Times and Star have articles reflecting upon the most popular candidates as being " Conservative,', , while Messrs Perceval. Reeves and Taylor are upheld as being "Liberal" candidates. Nothing can be more absurd, for in a young eoiony like New Zealand » Conservative would be an impossibility. But most certainly It' is an absurdity for the trio to pose as advanced Liberals when they support the remnant of the Stout-Vogel party. The policy of that party was based on the mosc worn out and antiquated notions that have been abandoned by the English years and years ago. Such as protection, enmity to education, heavy taxation, excessive borrowing* and other evils. It will be remembered that; when tsli Julius Vogel -vished to enter the British Parliament he stood as a pronounced Conservative. He knew that in England he. could not pose as a Liberal any more than the trio could. It is ridiculous to call the present Government Conservatives; but even if they were, , their ConaervatHu) is far more liberal and infinitely preferable to the shoddy makebelieve Liberalism of the Opposition— Yours, &c, Radical.
