AGRICULTURAL SHOWS.
COURTENAY. ... . President—Mr T. H, Anson. "vice-Presidents - r —Messrs J. Gough. H. W. Mcl/elland, - and G. Seaton. Hon. Treasurer—Mr A. McNae. Secretary—Mr G. Bedford./,. The Courtenay show, the last etoek : exhibition of the seaaou in Canterbury was held yesterday on the Association's grounds at Ktfrwee. The day was all that could be desired, the attendance was unusually large, and the stock shown of excellent quality, for a minor show. The executive are to be commended on the first-class arrangements they had made for the accommodation of exhibits and the comfort of visitors. i: Mr.) Craze's Burnham Band, who were on the ground twenty strong, discoursed music at intervals during the day, the boys playing in almost faultless style. The total number of entries fell somewhat short of last year, being 281 as against 305. Bat if the entries were somewhat short of previous years, the quality was, Iα most classes, several degrees better. Sheep were stronger in number than in 1889, and the judges said they were the best allround lot yet exhibited at Kirwee. ; There were no merinos, and although Mr ■ Seaton had little or no opposition in Border Leicesters, his sheep were worthy of being placed ,in any *how. Mr Gongh had th* Lincoln section, all to himself, and had in the pen some rettesentativesfrom the best known iOf our Lincoln breeders. There was an excellent display of crossbreds, and the quality of tbe fat sheep present would argue that the pastures of the country must be better than is generally supposed. Numerically, tbe show of cattle was about on a par with last year, the shorthorns, however,-were a much better lot, the young stock especially showing promise. The Ayrshires were also a superior lot to any previously seen at the Association's exhibitions. Four very fair' draught entires entered the ring, * pride of place being awarded Mr Boag's Middlerigg. The aged draught mares in both classes were an even lot, .and there was little to choose between them. The draught teams were exceptionally good, and the judges took occasion to remark, that they had. great difficulty in deciding the awards'. There was nothing of any great merit among the young draughts. The only light stallion on. the ground was Old Meteor, looking well and 1 lusty. He was given a first award in the hackney class. Several very useful hacks were shown, but call for no special mention. The only hunter entered was; Teazer, formerly well-known with the : Ashburton nounds, and the old horse; took the three qualifying jumps with-, out the slightest hesitation, being given** erst prize. . The high jumping "was its eagerly watched as at other ehowß. Of the two that competed, a mare and gelding, the latter proved the better, clearing 4ft Bin. In the Implement section, Mr W. Coggan, of West Melton, wa3 deservedly awarded prizes for vehicles built by himself, and which showed' very good workmanship. Most of the implements on the ground were for exhibition only, but the judges remarked that the whole of Messrs Booth and Mac-! Donald's entries were of the highest order of. merit, and deserving of a first prize. The ■ Buckeye, Hornsby, McCorinicfc, Deering, and Wood binders, in charge of energetic agents, were ou the ground* The prize list will indicate the most successful among the exhibitors of farm produce and poultry. Among the special exhibits was a couple of Fisher c patent butter, coolers, with enamelled shelves, which attracted great attention.
