THE THREE LIBERAL CANDIDATES.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—" Politics, like poverty, gives us strange bedfellows." This "must frequently have ; passed through the minds of Messrs Reeves and Perceval, when, as part of the trinity of Liberal talent (!) In Christchurch, they listened last' evening to the vapo rings of Mr B, M. Taylor, their political bedfellow. Both;these gentlemen ought to let the electors of Christchurch clearly know whether they endorse the following among many of the erratic opinions given vent to by ,Mr Taylor on the occasion referred to. I quote from your report of his speech;— 1. "There had been great talk of reforming tbe Legislative Council. Now he considered that body simply a Revising Committee, and not wanted at all. A very large saving could be effected by sweeping away the whole thing, and thus the form of Government." 2. " 'Another great saving could be effected by? doing away with the AgentGeneral in London. He did not see there was any necessity for che office, at all events the expense in connection.with it could be very considerably reduced." Then, Mr Taylor characteristically adds, *' It was because he spoke to the Government as he was speaking that the powers that be did not like him. All he could say was, that if they did not like him they would have to lump him" (whatever that may mean). Further on, Mr Taylor says he is in favor of (3) "a tax on foreign bondholders," thereby expressing himself in favor of what would be a complete breach of faith on the part of the colony, and tbe death knell of our credit in the money market of the world. \ Now, Messrs Reeve 3 and Perceval must either be in total accord with Mr Taylor's views when they ask the Liberal electors of Christchurch to vote for the trinity, or they have the effrontery to ask many of their supporters to swallow; wholesale their convictions in supporting the man they think the most fitting to go up with them to Wellington as the third [member for Christchurch. They may possibly find the Liberal electors not so malleable as they would like.—Yours, &c„ ••■••■•.■■■■■;.--■•'•■'■ Emecxoß? November 15th, 1890.
