THE SEMEN DEATH OF A WOMAN.

VERDICT OF MANSLAUGHTER. The adjourned enquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Marsala Cowan, wife of Alexander Cowan, cab driver, and which took place on the 6th inst., was held at the Courthouse yesterday afternoon, before Mr U. Beetham, Coroner. Mr Joynt was again present to watch the proceedings on behalf of the husband of deceased.

The only evidence tendered was that of Professor Bickerton, Analyst, Canterbury College, who stated he had received a stomach, sealed in a jar, from Detective p Connor, on the 12th inst. He had carefully analysed it, and could detect no trace of either mineral or vegetable poisoning. Mr Beetham summed up, and after an absence of a quarter of an hour the jury brought in the following verdict:—" That the deceased, Marsala Cowan, died from injuries received through her husband taking her by the throat, she being at the time in a weak state of health."

The Coroner said that the verdict was one of manslaughter. In discharging the jury he thanked them for their attendance, and stated that he concurred in their finding. Mr Joynt supposed the prisoner would be admitted to bail, and asked the Coroner to fix the amount. .

The Coroner said the bail would have to be substantial; two sureties at £250 each. The bail was not forthcoming last evening. <
