Beeetred November Sod, 10.40 ajn. MELBOURNE, November L A beautiful spring day was enjoyed for the opening of the V.B.C. Meeting, and although the day was warm a gentle breeze tempered the sun's rays. The attendance was very large, and it was estimated that fully 50,000 were present, Including his Excellency Lord Hopetoun, Xord Kintore, Governor of South Australia, and Admiral Sir Charles Scott. Remington never presented a better appearance, and the ground was all In favor of fast time being recorded. Betting was extremely brisk over the Melbourne Stakes and Derby, and as the favorites Won In each instance the victories were received with thunders of applause. The Admiral has at last broken the spell which seemed to hang over the winner of the Maribyrnong Plate, and Mr S. G. Cook, the owner of Pytchley Lodge, threw In for a good stake. The Derby was a s> slow race, the first mile taking one minute and half a second, which just suited The Admiral, and the last mile he .finished like a lion. Magic Circle, who *was runner-up, acted as whipper-in the 3best part of the journey, but came with a ■wet sail in the straight, and might have snatched victory had a less wide-awake jockey than Tom Hales been up on the favorite. A* it was The Admiral just got home by three-quarters of a length. Catling ran a good horse, and so did Correae, bnt Annesley, the Caulfield Guineas winner, who had been well supported down to a short price, cat up badly, and was never dangerous at any part of the caee. Warning and Silver Pine were most fancied, and they filled the places, but ted they not broken up several times they would perhaps have troubled the winner. The fifth race produced perhaps Oie very best finish seen at the Park between four horees, aid was in doubt right up to the winning post, old Potatau only snatching the victory in the last few strides, Barwood, Fair Nell, and Elsie Gay being so close that few but the judge could tell now to place them. A strong favorite in Whisper got home In the Pony Harness Bace, and Gipsy's Warning, who was made favorite for the Mile Saddle Race, got home, backers receiving the smallest dividend of the day, however, on the pony Whisper. Bttly-the-Nat, whowim the Three Mile Harness Bace, was well handled by Monro, but was hardly such a good favorite as Elsie Gay, who could only get third, and this race concluded a very good meeting. Boulanger led for over once round, when Burwood, who commenced very well, gradually drew to the head of affaire. Fair Nell, Elsie Gay, My Dream, and Potatau also making up their handicaps on the leaders. In the final round Burwood was closely pressed by Fair Nell and Elsie Gay was close in the wake of the latter, Potatau coming like a steam engine behind the trio. Rounding the first turn Elsie Gay on the outside tried to pass the leaders but failed, at the next turn she was level with Fair Nell, and at the final bend Burwood broke and she got her head in front- and was a length or two to the good half way up the straight when Potatan came very fast and both Elsie Gay and Fair Nell broke simultaneously, but were speedily steadied again and thus let Burwood in once more, and i a chain from the winning post the quartette were head and head. Potatau having most ■'• way "on winning by a dear length, the judge deciding the duel for second money ia favor of Burwood. The excitement was keen. Time, Smin Slsec; dividend, £5 7s.
