SETTLEMENT OF THE CHICAGO STRIKE. THE EIGHT HOURS DEMONSTRA.TIONS. [PEB PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] Received May 2nd, 12.30 p.m. London, May 1. Those taking part ia the labor demonstration are furious at the restrictions placed on them by the Chief Commissioner of Police. Small processions have been formed, and have started for Hyde Park, where addresses will be delivered. Paris, Mayl. The Government have forbidden deputations exceeding five members from approaching the Chamber of Deputies. It is rumored that Boulanger baa arrived to lead the processionists. Business in the city is at a standstill and the banking institutions are strongly guarded. Received May 2nd, 12.30 p.m. London, May 1. Mr J. Monro, Commissioner of Police, has given orders for trades' processions to be restricted to certain thoroughfares in the metropolis. Received. May 2nd, 1 p.m. London, May 1. Up to three o'clock this -afternoon no disturbances were reported from the Continent. Received May 2nd, 12.30 p.m. London, May 1. A compromise has been effected between the Directors of the Great Southern and Western Railway Company, Ireland, and the men out on strike. New Yoke, May 1. The difficulty which caused the strike of'carpenters in Chicago has now been settled, and the men will resume work on Monday Received May 2nd, 8.20 p.m. London, May 1. To-day there was a small procession of Socialists from the Viotoria Embankment to Hyde Park. As yet no serious disturbance has occuired on the Continent in connection with the labor celebrations. At Paris slight skirmishes tooK place between the mob and police and military. At Buda-Pesth the military charged and suppressed the rioters. Elsewhere all is tranquil. Received May 3rd, 1.20 a.m. Paris, May 2. The labor demonstration passed off quietly, though the cessation of work was iairly general throughout France. The Due de Luynes denies that he is in any way connected with a Royalist conspiracy. Berlin, May 2, The labor celebrations were scarcely observed in Germany, Vienna, May 2, Fifty thousand paraded the streets yesterday advocating the eight hours movement. There was no disturbance, and in the evening the crowds quietly dispersed. London, May 2.: At other places on the Continent and America nothing startling happened.
[PBES3 ASSOCIATION TJSLEGBAM.I DUNEDIN, May 2. The delegates from the Wharf Laborers' Union brought the Conference to a clos e this evening, the whole of the rules having been carefully revised. A resolution was passed expressing sympathy with the Canterbury Typographical Association iv regard "to their difficulty with Whifccombe and Tombs, fully endorsing the proceedings taken, and recommending that the ease be brought before eaoh branch, of the Association, and any delegates who are members of School Committees to bring the matter before the different Boards, and prevent the firm from getting any of their printing wort.. The local branch of the Society of Railway Servants have voted ;£iQ to the Petone mill hands.
