GRAIN AND PRODUCE,

Cables from England report a fluctuating market, and that towards the end of last week fid per quarter of the recent advance had been lost. The latest telegrams, however, note that the market has again hardened for '•spot" business, Ms 6d per quarter having been paid for the Maguat off coast. But it is evident that English buyers mistrust the future, as they are refusing forward business at 34a 6d, their best offers being 83s 6d, at which a cargo of New Zealand wheat per Drum Craig was sold for forward shipment. From this it would seem that stoefea in England are comparatively low, but that buyers consider that there is sufficient wheat •' in view " to more than supply the requirements up to next season, consequently they are not incliaed to speculate much in futures. Locally, last week's prices have been fully maintained, and although the principal buyers have been chary in giving the: figures asked by sellers, yet considerable; business has been done at to-day'a quota-; tiona. Qat* show a declining tendency, but sellers are not pushing sales. Both maltsters and merchants are careless about' barley and there is nothing doing. Considerable sales of cocksfoot took place during the week and prices close flrin. Very little business in potatoes is reported, buyers and sellers being far from in touch as to prices, the latter asking fully 10a per ton more than the former are prepared to give. Beans and pease are slow of sale and growers are shipping to England on their own account freely. Dairy produce is without animation and calls for no special comment.
