Merinos were repre- **» oy a very few wethers and two or
three lots of ewes. Considerable interest was taken in the sale, both the trade and exporters operating freely, although last i week's values were hardly maintained,' which could not be expected. A highly i satisfactory clearance was made, ana we are convinced vendors will be pleased with their account sales. Our transactions included the following:-—For a client, 404 crossbred freezers ac 16s; on account of Mr H. Rothery, 24 crossbred ewes at 17s 4d (topping the market in their class), 9 two-tooths mixed sexes at 17s lid; on acccount Messrs W. and H. Fat Lambs—A moderate entry, including a fair proportion suitable for export, which were in good demand. We sold for a Southern client 51 at from 10s vto 12s Id; for Mr Stewart a line at 14s 6d, the highest price of the day. Store Sheep—Business done in this department was very limited. The entry was a li«ht one, and included only one line of fair two and four-tooth wetbers, a few lots of saleable lambs, a small lot of merino wethers, and two or three Dene of I merino ewes, and a line of aged crossbred ewes. We sold for Mr T. Taylor, 200 two and four-tooth Wethers at lls 9d and 11s 10d; these being the only suitable ; lines for putting ou to turnips were keenly competed for ; on account of the same owner, merino ewes at 3s; soundmouth, merino ewes made 3s 6d, crossbred lambs 7s to Bs, crossbred ewes a* 6d to 7s Bd. Fat Cattle—A small supply was offered, principally second-class quality, and went at fair enquiry, a clearance being made at rates as follows:—Steers, £6 to SI 12s 6d; cows and heifers, £4 to £6153; beef making 14s to 18s per 1001b. Store Cattle—A medium entry of the usual small lots that have characterised the sales of late, with the 'same 'difficulty to effect sales, except at very low rates. For Mr T. Taylor we sold dry cows at £3 2s6d. Figs—A large entry of about 600 good sorts, chiefly baconers,' were penned, but business in this department has gone from* bad to worse, and very low rates had to be accepted, as curers are holding off for cooler weather. District Sales—At the Leestoa Saleyards, on the 25th ult, there was a Rood ' attendance. There was a small entry of | sheep, for. which there was a fair inquiry. Store lambs predominated and sold up to 8s lOd. The supply of p&s was large and included some splendid baconers. The sale, however, of this class was a fiasco; the bulk of the entry was passed out unsold. The usual odd lots of cattle were yarded aud put through in the same lifeless style, except for good springers, for which there is a steady demand. At Dunsandel saleyards, on Monday, 28th ult., the efforts of the directors of the Yard Company to revive a market at this centre were splendidly responded to by the settlers in the district, and a good entry of about 2200 sheep was yarded, also about 50 head of good- cattle. There was a general master of farmers, dealers, &c, who meant business, the result being a very satisfactory clearance. A number of useful lines of lambs were penned and met one of the best sales of the year. Wβ sold for Mr Sheat a line of first cross lambs at 8s lOd, which headed the market; ' for Messrs Westenra Bros., 230 first cross lambs at 7s 8d; for a client, 200 crossbred ewee at 4s 6d ; for Mr Walker, a Une of crossbred ewes at 5s 8d; and for a client, do at 3s 9d.; for Messrs Westenra Bros., fat steers from £5 12s 3d to £Q 7s ; do heifers, £5 to £5 los. At Ashburton County Saleyards, on 29th ultimo, an entry of about 9000 sheep was yarded, the bulk being merino ewes and wethers. The attendance was, as usual, good, and the demand for all sound good-conditioned store sheep continues brisk, in fact, has increased for well-grown two and four-tooth crossb. Eds for turnips, a line of fourtooth wethers in very forward condition and large-framed bringing up to 15s 9d. Two and four-tooth mixed crossbreds made lls 6d to 12s 6d; sound-mouth merino ewes, 4s to 4s 4d; merino' Wethers,: 5s 6d to 7s 3d; do lambs, 3s Id to 4s Id; .crossbred do, 6s to 7s.
Mb P. C. Tabajbt reports on the live stock market for the' week ending Ist May as follows:—The total number of ' stock yarded at the Addington yards comprised 8177 sheep and lambs, 367 head of cattle, and 582 : pigs. Fat Cattle—There was a full supply of beef, for which there was a fair: demand, and though values were barely* up to last week's quotations, good prices were , obtained when prime quality were offered. Best quality steers made from £6 5s to £7 12s 6d; lighter weights, £5 upwards ; best cows and heifers, £5; 10a to £6 15s ; medium and inferior, £3 las upwards. A good clearance was '* effected. Store cattle are' without any improvement. Those brought forward are generally of medium and inferior descriptions and elicit bat little competition. Good dairy cows are in demand, and sell freely at sood values up to £7 and £7 10s per head, but inferior' cattle are difficult to sell at any price. Fat Sheep—There wae a full yarding, every pen being < filled. There was a fair uroportiou of freezing quality on "offer, for which there was a good demand, competition ranging to within a shade of last week's values. Fat ewes also found ready buyers amongst the trade at prices equal to last week's quotations. Best pens of freezing wethers made from: 15s, 15s 6d. 169, 16* 9d, 17s, 17s 91, ISs 6J, to 19s; niediutn, 12s *6d upwards; best pens fat crossbred ewes, 14a to 16s lid; medium, Ha 6d to 13s; and light weights, 9s 6dupwards; merino wethers, 6s 6d, and ewes 7s 6d. Fat-Lambs —A smaller entry than for which fchere was good competition throughout. Freezers made from 12* to l4s 6d ; trade lambs, 8s to 10s, and stores 6s 6d upwards. Store department showed a large falling off in numbers. Those forward realised good values as compared with late sales, and almost every line on offer changed owners. Two-tooth crossbred wethers raaoe up to 11s lOd, and crossbred ewes for breeding purposes, Qα to 9s, accordant; to age and condition; merino wethers, 5s to 7s, aud merino ewes to 2* 7d to 3s. Pigs—There was again a large entry of good bacon pigs, for which there was a slightly improved demand, be3t pigs making from 36s to 425, and lighter weights 28s upwards. There was a good demand for porkers and well grown stores. Sheepskins, Tallow, Bough Fat, Hides and Cailfsfcins- My sales for the week comprise 3107 sheepskins, 7 casks tallow, 92 bags and packages of rough fat, and aboutltfi hides and calfskins. There'was the usual attendance of felltndngers, and, considering the reported depression of wooi in the London market, competition -was good. Butchers* best crossbreds made 3s 9d, 4s, 4s 3d, 4s 5d to 4s 9d, medium 3s upwards; butchers' best merinos, 3s, 3s 3d to 3s 7d, small and medium 2s upwards; lambs, large, 3s, 3s 3d, 3s 7d to 3s lid, small and medium 2s upwards. Dry skins were held over in consequence of the late j hour of sales. Rough fat, ljd and Ifd, for best parcels d>7 country fat; rendered fat, i lid; butchers', l|d and lid; .inferior, gd and |d. Tallow, fair quality, 16s 6d per cwt; las 6d medium, 14s inferior. Hides and calfskins are without alteration.
Messrs Dicker axd Co. report on the live stock market for the week ending Thursday. May Ist, as follows:—At the Addiugton Yards on Wednesday 8177 sheep, 367 head of cattle, and 532 pig* were yarded, of which number our'entry consisted of 4418 sheep. 116 head of cattle, and 167 pigs, on account of the following clients, viz.:—Messrs Trott Bros., Burke Brothers, D. Biirdon, James Muir, Willcox and KedLey, Flack Brothers,. E. Pepper, R. Brown, E. McConnel, W. Trotter, "W. Farlane, M. Barnett,' Jno. Tod, A. Muir, C. T. Dudley, W. B. Scott, J. Farron, J. Johns, W. Uearoe, C. EL Goulding, W. Cannon, T. Quick, W. Stone, A. D. Sheridan, T. Garnett, Peter Stephens, H. Macartney, T. Bovd, D. Hurford, W. X«e, G. W. Luxton, W. Homer, A. Bennett (Greenpark), M. Latter, A. F. Bennetts, A. W. Bennetts and others. , _
Fat Cattle—A fair number of cattle were offering, mostly good quality. The demand was only moderately active, the small supply of the previous week causing butchers to be rather short, and sales were made at fully late rates, vis., 17s to 18s 6d per 100 lbs, according to the quality. Steers sold at from £6 to £8 7s 6d; heifers and fat cows, at from £3 5s to £6 15s. We sold for various clients, about 40 head fat steers from £5 2s 6d to £6155; heifers, £3 5s to £5 ss, and fat cows up to £6 15s per head. Store Cattle— A numerous entry of odd
lots, very few, if any, lines of good stores I being on offer. The demand was exceed- ' intrly dull, values showing no alteration. We soJd:—For Mr M. Barnett, a line of store cows at from 37s to 41s per head; for Mr John Todd, a line of two-year-olds at 45s per head; and a great number of store cows at from £12s to 43 per head. Dairy Cattle—A good number yarded but mostly inferior sorts, and tne demand was not so good as at recent sales. Pigs—Another large entry, mostly bacon pigs. Curers mustered in good numbers, and competition, up to a certain point, was fairly keen, but values are not to be compared with thoss ruling at this time last year, and sellers are anything but satisfied. Baconers sold at from 36s to 45s for heavy weights, 30s to 34s medium weights, that being about 3d per lb; porkers sold at from 18s to 26* each, and from 3d to 3£d per lb, as per quality. Fat Sheep—The market was a peculiar one. Prices opened on a par with last week's rates, but they soon receded to the extent of from Is to Is 6d per head. Afterwards values advanced again and closed firm at late quotations. The entry was about an average one, the quality on the whole being good, some lines of extra good quality being yarded. Best freezers sold at from 15s to 18s, fat ewes from 7s to 14s. Very few merino wethers on offer. Merino ewes 5s 9d to 6s 6d. We sold on account of Messrs Flack Bros. 100 crossbred ewes at 7s Id; for a client 35 crossbred ewes at 9s; for Messrs Flack Bros, 62 crossbred ewes at lls 9d; for Mr G. Jones, 238 crossbred two-tooths at from lls to 14s ; for Mr A. W. Bennetts, 100 merino wethers at Cs 6d; for Mr A. F. Bennetts, 123 crossbred ewes at from 7s 6d to lls; for a client, 235 crossbreds at from 14s to 14s 8d; for Messrs Flack Bros., 97 crossbred ewes from 7s 10d to 10* sd; for a client, 273 two-tooth mixed sexes at 13s lOd. Private Sales of Stock—During the week we have sold privately for various customers 300 crossbred ewes at '9s, 1000 lambs at 7s, and several lots of freezers at current rates. Store Sheep—The number yarded was far smaller than of late. Only one lot of sheep suitable for turnips were yarded, and for these there was considerable competition. The bulk of the entry consisted of second-rate lots, for which there was not much demand. We sold for a client a line of boilers at 2s 3d, 50 lambs at Bs, 50 do at 7s 10d, 410 merino ewes (culls) at Is sd; for Mr Recce, 57 crossbred lambs (culls) at 5s 6d, 41 crossbred ewes at os 6d; for Mr Latter, 284 merino ewes at 3s Sd, 135 crossbred ewes at 8s Id; for Mr M. Fat Lambs—A small entry. Any fit for export sold readily at late values; for interior sorts there is scarcely any demand. Best lambs realised up to 14s. We sold for Mr D. Burdon a line of splendid lambs at from 13s to 14s; for a client, 99 at 9a 6d; for Mr Muir, 20 at lls; for Messrs Wilcox and Kelly, 39 at 12s 6d, 23 at 123, 27 at 10s 9d, 18 at 7s 9d. Sheepskins, Hides, Fat, Tallow, &c— At the New Zealand Wool Stores, this day, we held our weekly sale of above, .submitting a very large entry of green and dry skins. The attendance of fellmongers was about as usual, and values for all classes of skins about on a par with those lately ruling. Best crossbred skins sold at from 3s 9d to as each, medium 2s 6d to 3s 3d, merino skins sold at from 23 3d to 3s 8d; lambskins 2s 6d to 3$ 6d. Fat and Tallow—No alteration in values, best rough fat, l|d to lid per lb, inferior Id per lb. Factory Skins—During the past week we have sold large numbers of skins ex Belfast and Islington Factories. Clearing Sales —Oα Tuesday last, on account of Mr John Vick, we held a clearing sale of implements, horses, sheep, &c, &c. Messrs Wilson and Sons' report of their market at the Farmers' Saleyards Company on Saturday last. The supplies of poultry was larger than usual, and very good quality came forward. The birds are now showing the effects of good harvest feeding, and are at their best. The demand, too, was quite equal to the supply, and a good return was made to sellers. Price 2a to 2s 9d; roosters, 3s to 3s, 9d; and ducks, 3s to 4si "with gooO. demand;- geese, 4a to ss. We hope to do better with geese; they have been too low compared with others. Turkeys—We were very dissatisfied wiih our buyers. We report a vigorous market and big prices, and when we get a nice lot in our buyers won't stand to us, consequently our reports are considered faulty, and our sellers highly disgusted it what they call a " take in. One thing must be taken into account in such cases, the auctioneers may report correctly, but cannot force buyers to be correct, or to be always the same.; Prices were:—Hens from 7s 6d to 9s, cocks 12s, and some we sent back. Pigs—The market ie about the same through the low price, the supplies were shorter. Suckers are in limited demand, the prices being from 3s 6d to 6s 6d; stores dp well if of any size, and realise from 13s to 225, with ready sale. Pork we consider sells from 3W to 4d, assumed weights, and for these we have a very ready sale and plenty of competition. Horses—We had about the usual quantity, but some better class, "the trade not very brisk. Cows — Milch cows are selling well now; anything in milk goes ac full value. The trap sale is very, brisk too, and our stocks decreasing. The inside sale of cheese, bacon, hams, and furniture, was good; old , cheese is now nearly, out of the market. We get 3d to Ski for the best; the same can be said of old bacon. Produce is without much change. Potatoes are selling fairly well. Derwents have changed hands at 455, and we hope they won 6 be any less." The Sydney market is not very favorable from last quotations, but our information leads us to conclude that this is only temporary. Onions are very slow, and there ie not much hope for this very perishable article, except they can be kept for some time yet. Grain remains about the same. We have sold some oats for feed at Is 7d; chick wheat; from 23 to 2s 3d. Land—We find the most of our life made up of trials, of which we certainly get our share. Outside sales we have had several, and in each case-satisfactory returns were obtained.
