RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening. There were present—The Major (Mr E.JEI. Gpod), Cra. hansom, Cone, Stevens, Manning, Ivory, I Luxton, and Jennings. An apology was made for Cγ. Keir's absence.. Letters were read from Mr Barns, Secretary to the Fire Insurance Association with reference to a contribution towards the cost of sinking fire wells. From Merrin and Co., Auckland, and Anderson ■ and Morison, Dunedin, re hose for fire engine. The Mayor stated that the hose ordered by the Council had been procured, but had cost mere than was anticipated. The Town Clerk, Kaiapoi, wrote asking if the Council was sending to England for hose, to get some for the Kaiapoi engine. E. Beece and Co. wrote offering β-in pipes at a reduced price. Mr T. x> MoTyneaux wrote offering to allow the' Council to carry the drainage through his property, and offering to do the work. The Works Committee was instructed to inspect and report. From City Surveyor, Christchurch, replying that the Council has no Bin iron pipes on hand. The poundkeeper's quarterly return was laid on the table. The Works Committee. reported that three fire wells had been sunk, and were being lined with concrete, but some misunderstanding had taken place as to the guarantee by the inhabitants. A quantity of shingle had been taken out of the pit by the day men, ready for use in the winter. It was decided that the Works Committee inspect the fire well in Ivory street, which had fallen in, and be empowered to settle the matter. On the motion of Cγ. Jennings, it was resolved that the portion of resolution passed on 14th March relating to the fruarantee in aid of fire wells be rescinded, and that the Council bear the whole cost, of putting them down. The Surveyor reported that the men had been engaged in repairs and ordinary work duruuc the month. The time had come to give notice of the Council's intention to make and levy a rate for the present year. The bargees list was ready for inspection. Only twelve dogs had been registered. After some discussion on the estimates for the year, Cγ. Jennings moved, and Cγ. Manning seconded, "That the rate for the year be fifteen-sixteenths of a penny in the £." Cγ. Stephens moved— "That the rate be fd in the &." Cγ. Ivory j seconded. After all the Councillors had spoken, the motion was carried by five votes to three. The financial statement showed the receipts for the month to have been £o£ 18a 2d; Dr. balance at Bank £269 Gs 3d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £83 14s lid. It was decided to write to Inspector Fender to ask if- he would allow ' Constable Costin to act ad Inspector of Slaughter-houses and Dog-ranger. Cγ. Cone said that the Fire Brigade offered to place the shield won by them at Wellington in the Council Chamber until next competition, which was allowed by the Council. Several matters of minor importance were referred to, and the meeting i terminated. '
