EXHIBITION OF LIGHTING AND

HEATING APPLIANCES.

During the last few yean the use of gas lor beating and cooking purposes has* been greatly increased, so much so that the ingenuity of manufacturers of the accessary appliances has been largely Btfanalated. This has resulted in the production not only of useful bnt ornamental atticle* in the various departments, and it U almost'BstomstiinK to note the number and variety which are now in use. From time to time notices have appeared in these columns of the seas stoves, &c M introduced by the Christchurch Gas Company. 'M&, however, the demand is increasing Tepidly, and in order to pat practically Wore the householders of Cbristcburch the'advantages accruing from the use of Eaior cooking and heating, the Company ye determined upon a new departure. Xbis'is in the form of a display not alone Of the appliances referred to, but also of the latest improvements in the matter of lighting. To this end very suitable premises taste i been taken in Morten's Buildings, fefefaagthe corner shop facing Colombo street «ad Cathedral square. This was lighted up JBti .Saturday evening for the first time, and attracted a great deal of attention. JSere are displayed gas stoves, water iieaters, boiler burners, &a, together, as Ms been said, with the latest improved styles of gas lights. These latter include tae 'Bower-Wenham, the Cromartie, the Bchuike. and the Silver. The first-named •tfghfc--the Bower-Wenham—is somewhat •imilar in appearance as regards the fittttags, &a, to the Wenham, but the light ;)* of a different shape. In the Bower, by fen ingenious arrangement, the light 'iAsames a globular form, something the ihape of an orange, and every particle of the illuminating properties of the gas is Utilised. The light, whilst beautifully soft tsd mellow, is also exceedingly powerful, and well fitted for iarge buildings, such M halls, hotels, &c. The Schulke is fitted iritfc twin burners, and is a fine light, and fcjie Cromartie is also a very excellent one 'somblning the maximum of light with moderate expenditure of gas. The gas cooking stoves exhibited are of all ikes and shapes, from the largest, fitted to cook for an extensive hotel or public institution, to that suited to the ione-lorn Bachelor. These are fitted with all the latest improvements in the matter of gas cookery, and* as the strongest medical (Opinions have been given in favor of the superiority of food cooked by gas over that In any other way, there is no reason why these stoves should not largely be made use of. The Company have provided a very liberal scheme of letting them out on ihire on such terms as to place them within t £he .reach of all, and they also do the •necessary fitting free of charge. In the 'matter of heating stoves there is a large variety exhibited in all shapes and designs, Including those manufactured by Wright, Fletcher and Wilson. The Backus patent tt* faorelty here; • This is fitted at the bottom with a reservoir containing water. The front surface of the stove is composed pf.:..a. series of chambers, the steam generated-., : from the reservoir fills these chambers, and supplies a large heating surface with a very small expenditure of gas. At tlie side there is an fecape for the waste steam. There are also tome stoves fitted with encaustic tiles, and others to which false covers can be fitted of silver, gold, and bronze. These eatt be placed over the. ordinary stoves, giving them a very handsome appearance. Mother nove ty is called Clark's syphon lighting and heating stove. What Mr Bishop, the Secretary, has appropriately named the cheerTO settle, whistles when boiling, so that there can be no mistake as to tbe right Aoment of projection either for mixing the cap that cheers but does not inebriate or the insinuating and more jßXhttarating toddy. The ingenious little Appliances known as boiling burners, by which water can be heated anywhere that fr needed by means of india-rubber tubing, and tailors' and laundresses , irons' internally heated, are exhibited in great variety. Then there are geysers and fnter heaters of all descriptions, by means of which hot baths, &c, can be had at a ttW minutes' notice. In order to show these in working order a tank of water Bμ been fitted up, and the rapidity with Which it is heated is remarkable. Altofjp&her the Company make a very excel* Ifct.display, and Mr D.Martin, the inspector, of the outdoor department, under trfeofte supervision the fitting up and display has been arranged, deserves very great credit for the manner in which the ifork has been carried oat.
