C.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING.

Anticipations by Spectatob. This meeting, which, appears likely to be favoured* with fine weather, has drawn more visitors than were expected, and an unusually large number of people were in town on Saturday night, which augurs well from an attendance point of view, and as the quality of the fields is good enough to ensure fair contests, there is reason to anticipate a successful gathering at Riccarton during to-day and to-morrow. The following are the final payments made for the different events, with the names of the probable riders in the Autumn Stakes, and my comments on and selections for each race on the first day :— Christchurch Hurdle Race, a handicap sweep ot i soys, with 100 soys added; second horse 15 soys out ot stakes. T wo miles. st.lb 1 ' stlb Ahua •- 13 o|Secnrus ..9 3 Cathedral .. 91U| Royalty ..9 0 Little Arthur :.. <. 9 31 . i . ~ j I have not seen Cathedral or Royalty since they ran at Dunedin, or Little Arthur since' he ran at Hororata. Ahua and Securus are both well; perhaps the former is just ou the big side, but if Cathedral Is so well as he was in Dunedin and Little Arthur as well as at Hororata— and I think he could have been improved on his form there—l don't see how he can win a true run race, 'indeed, while I like to have a good honest horse on my side, I am afraid that one or more of the very uncertain lot opposed to him must on this occasion turn up trumps, and especially if there is a wind blowing like there was when he got beaten in the Spring Hurdles on the first day. Securus will probably act as a pace maker, and as he and Little Arthur are. hard pullers the pace is likely to be made' good. CATHEDRAL looks best in myeyes. The Templeton Stakes, a handicap sweepstakes of 2 soys each,, with 100 soys added, second 15 soys out of stakes." One mile. st lb j ' stlb Ruby .. 9 0 Leinater ...75 Alcinous .. 9 0 i Urn ..7 0 Lord Aaton .. 8 0 j Red Cross • .. 6 7 Ked Ensign .. 7.7.1; ~„■'; .: Red Cross and Loo are two whose form I have not had an opportunity of seeing lately in public nor have 1 seen Lord Aston off the training track, 1 like his appearance there and I shall take him as likely to fight out with RUBY who, however, I expect will win. ' The Great Autumn Stakes, a handicap sweepstakes of 5 soys eaou, with soys added; second horse to receive 300 soya, and idle third horsa 20 soys out of the Ktake; for three-year-olds and upwards. The winner of any Handicap of thy value of 100*sovs-after the declaration of tbe weights, 51b ; 200 soya, 71b extra. One mile and a half. : st lb Dudu .. (Mathews). 9 8 Merrie England (White) 9 1 Koae Argent .. „ JBoyle) 8 0 Wolverine .. (F. Holmes) 7 10 -St James .. (Buddicombe) 7 6 Alsace.. .. (Wiaby) .7 0 Ciuibble ..: -(Kay) 612 Helmsman .. (Holmes) 6 0 * I bav'e ; given my* opinion on this race some time since, and I have no reason toalter it-Sow. Dudu I believe to be very and all T want to see is Mathews ride her a good race, and Merrie England, being to my mind above himself, will have to go under notwithstanding the good horseman who is to ride bim., .Wolverine, St. James, Alsace, and Helmsman I have seen within the past day or two. The former looks well, and if the good horse claimed for him should at least make a bit of a fight, but on Saturday morning St. James appeared to have the best or him in their work, and St. James does not look so well as his companion by a lot. I don't think Alsace could win turned loose, nor do I think Helmsman at all dangerous, though his owner lately put his price up a bit, and has evidently some faitn left in the son of Charity. Quibble must be past winning an Autumn Handicap. Rose Argent has been mentioned as likely to go out; on public form she can have little show, but she has always given mc the idea of one wanting time, and in the Autumn mares run best, and : I cannot forget that she has shown plenty j

of brilliancy, and If she has train-id op since the Summer Meeting sba-naaf-be the most likely to effect a surprise on DUDU, who carries my vote.

Champagne Stakes of 15 eova each, with 300 soya added ; second horse to receive SO sove, and the third 25 eovs out of the stake. Colts. Bet 101b: fillies. Bat 81b; geldings, Bst 71b. Six furlongs. (Closed with 58 subs). Mr O. Q. Stead's eh c Medallion, by Nordenfeldt—Lookec (Imp) Mr P. Batler'a blk c Ihaclceray. by Apremont (imp)—BecKy aharo Mr D. 0 Brien's bo Freedom, by Captlvator (imp)— Maid of Honor Mr G. G. Stead's b c Moraine, by Apremont (imp)-Miss Flat Mr J. Harris' b c Pygmalion, by Apremont (imp)— Nautilus. * Medallion is not regarded by " Augur " a3 a first-class colt, and we on this side have had no opportunity of judging, but the class of the field now opposed to him should give us a chance of judging. I have allowed a feeling to grow on mc since seeing Pygmalion run at Dunedin and Wanganui, that he is not going to be the good finisher I expected. I have no faith in Freedom staying out a fast six furlongs with Sst lOlb. aud Thackeray is too uncertain a tempered one to follow out. Mdraine in the Spriug was, 1 should say, 141b , behind Pygmalion and behind Rose Argent at New Year time, so that on public running, taking no heed of Pygmalion's defeat at Dunedin by Thackeray, we must look now to Medallion to fight out the tinish with Pygmalion, and if he is a good one and well ho will worst the son ot Apretnont. I take MEDALLION to wi \ The Epsom Welter Stakks. a handicap sweepstakes of 1 soy, wiih 100 soys added; second 15soveout of stub*. One and abalf miles. st lb at lb Kimberley .. 9 2 Leinstor ..8 7 Sucurue ..9 0 Yarra ..8 3 CountD'Orsay ..9 0 Catamount ..8 0 Sir Julius ..9 0 Harktiway ..7 7 Enchantress .. 812 Preston .. 7 7 This event I expect to be won by I COUNT D'ORSAY, nnd I think Yarm, from accounts I heard on Saturday, is likely to prove troublesome. The Russley Stakes, a handicap sweepstuk.es of 2 BOVB cacb, with 100 eovs added, second horse 15 aova from stakes. Five furlong*. stlb 1 stlb Ohatfleld .. 8 7 Town Moor ..8 0 Esaiite .. 8 7 I Bon Trovato ..72 Diadem .. 8 s|llichlake ..7 2 Liquidation .. 85| Vanity ..7 0 Carronade .. 8 s|LadyMxb ..7 0 Burlesque .. 8 5| TOWN MOOR will have moat to fear from one of Mr Stead' 3 fillies, probably Liquidation.
