MINING NEWS.

fraoH OUR correspondent.] REEFTON, April 6,

The following are the battery returns for the past week:—Welcome, 2300z of amalgam from twenty tons stone; Keep-it-Dark, 760z amalgam from seventy tons; No. 2 South Keep-it-Dark, 620z amalgam from twenty-nine tons: Inglewood, 121oz amalgam from ninety tons; Progress, 2210z amalgam for the week; Globe, 214jz amalgam from 175 tons.

Inkerman —The mine manager reports " The winze was sunk nine feet for the week, total depth being 105 feet below No. 1 level. I got the hanging wall in the north end of the winze on Thursday. The stone is four feet wide and showing nice gold. I have not got the hanging nail in the south end, but from the way the wall is running I should say the stone in this south end is five and a half feet wide. The main shaft is finished to a depth of 170 feet below No. 1 level and 238 feet below the surface. A chamber is cut out 150 feet below No. 1 level. As soon as 1 get the flat shute laid down I shall start to drive for the reef which I expect to cut in a very sbort distance from the end of the chamber. The cage and trucks are all ready to go on as soon as I get the girdles on from the brace to the poppet heads. The tramway from the face to the aerial paddock will be finished in about two days. There is about 120 tons of payable stone to grass from the winze." Hard to Find—A tender was accepted last night for sinking the winze 100 ft, the price being 36s per foot. Resolution —The Company is still driving on a good track of reef, the country being very favorable.

Reward—Work is temporarily suspended here.

Supreme—Crushing was commenced at the old Rainy Creek battery yesterday. The reef is large, but the quality has yet to be proved.

Just in Time—The old Company having been wound up voluntarily, the new Company to take over the property is now in process of registration.

Sir Francis Drake —A small crushing of a miscellaneous parcel of stone from the mine was finished last night, but the result was poor, and work will probably be now suspended on the mine for a time, and the battery allowed for public crushing until such time as a plan of action has been decided on.

Inglewood—Crushing is still going on, but with two shifts only. Tne returns for this week are above the average.

Progress—The full number of twer.tyfive stampers is now in full work, and the returns for the week give a good index of the value of the stone.

Everything in the Boatman's district continues in a very backward state, and there is not an item to be reported from any of the mines there.

United Alpine—The mine manager reports:— "The south intermediate level has been extended 10ft, the total length being 39ft. There is no change in the reef. All clean stone. In the north level the foot wall reef has been driven on 4ft without change, and on the hanging wall a stone drive has been put in Bft, but as there is no appearance of the two meeting I am now following the footwall reef only. The leading stope has been extended lift, the total length being 35ft, with no change in the reef."

The following calls are announced for the current month:—Golden Lead Id, Hercules 2d, Gallant Id, National Id, Murray Creek Id, Hard-to-Find Id, Resolution Id, Lowel Level Id, Golden Treasure 2d. Big River 3d, Lone Star 2d, Specimen Hill 2d, Prima Donna Id.

The Brokers' Association report as follows -.—" Steady business has been done in several lines during the week, but prices have shown no great tendency to advance although there is a firmer tone in the different stocks. The limited extent of crushing operations at the Dark has temporarily deprived the shares of their usual prominence, but any improvement in the mine cannot but have the effect of creating business. Globe show an improvement, and sold at from 19s 6d up to 20s 3d. On Thursday there was a better demand for the stock, consequent on the appearance of the reef and stone of extra good quality having been struck. Inkerman keep at about 22s 6d, with shares hard to get at that figure. Progress sold in small lines at 275, at which figure sellers are prepared to do business. United Alpine varied between 26s 6d and 275, but had only limited business. Steady crushing will make this stock active again. Argosy had low buyers, and Big River would be placed in big parcels at 3s. Bendigo were wanted at 7d, and sellers asked a slight advance. A considerable improvement in the prospects of Inangahua Low Level brought shares into notice, and sales were made at prices varying up to Is, but the market is sluggish again and prices down. This Company's property was at one time one of the most valuable gold producers on the field. Lyell Creek, Merrijigs, and Hercules all had buyers at low rates, but no business was done. Supreme are stationary, and crushing starts next week. Reward were in demand at lOd, and Resolution at 9d. Scotia offered on a flat market at 2s 6<L Crushing resumes next week. There were buyers of Specimen Hill at low rates. In Wealth of Nations business was done at up to ss. On an improvement in the mine buyers of United Italy offered 6d. Midday quotations:—Argosy, 6d to 7dj; Big River, 3s to 3s 3d; Bendigo, 6d to 7d; Golden Lead, Is 9d to 2s 3d; Globe, 19s 6d to 20s; Inkerman, 22s 3d to 22s 9J; Inangahua Low Level, 9d to Is; Lyell Creek, 4d to 6d; Merrijigs, 7d to 8d; Hercules, buyers Is; Progress, -sellers 275; Resolution, 7d to 8d; Supreme, 3s to 33 3d; Scotia, sellers 2s 6d; Specimen Bill, buyers Is; United Alpine, 26s to 275; Wealth of Nations, 4s 9d to 55.-"
