fVKOU OUR CORRESPONDENT.^ DXJNEDIN, January U, - A strong wind prevailed from the southwest all day, and was very cold. 'Jthe shooting, on the whole, was poor. The marking was an improvement on the pare* ▼ions day. There are a great many complaints about the catering, which is done by Mosgiel tradesmen. To-morrow sh ootIng will commence at eight, and ''cease firing" will sound at seven. Some of the Canterbury men are improving in their shooting, and are beginning to feel more at homo on the rauge. Others have not been able to master the elrong gusty wind aud dull light. The arrangements of meeting are scarcely as g/oodas In former years, and mucb time has been lost. Matters may progress more satisfactorily in another day or two. Par slow, of Auckland, the champion, is in gocd form, and will take a lot of beating for Che belt. The Victorians have done nothing remarkable to-day, except Captain Hariby, who put on the possible with ten shots at 500 yards. In the Marlborough mat eh Major Purnell put on 40,9 bullseyes and a mugpie. These scores were made in the evening after the wind had lulled. The Victorian was loudly cheered for his fine: wore. The Wellington Match was not co> npleted till late vo-day, owing to a nam'ter of men from the Jsorth not arriving tilJi last night, and the men will be allowed to ahooc in r match. As some of those who scored will be in the prize libO, there are several Canterbury men who will take money. Saiek, of Ashburton, jput on 21 at 800 yards, and this'made up> his score to 86. Hammond, of the Reserve Corps, is shooting well, and scored 8& Wakelin is also in pood form, and 'thotrah unfortunate enough to get a mi as at tae target, he put on 85. Foster, of Uie Chr istchurch JUfies, 80. Torlesse and Tyler (Eiangiora), Sandtord (Chriatchurch) 79. F. iteker and Leech, broke up at 600 yards. The scores were:— J. C. Josllng and F. Beker 75, Anderson (Engineers), J. J. Collins 74, Scott (Christchurch Rifles) 73, Manning 72, Cameron 71, McKay (Reserves), {Buddell 70. In the first stage of the Hawke's Bay Match, 500 and SCO yards, ten shots at each range, the best scores of the Canterbury mem were— Scott (Christchurch Rifles) 45, Bashford 43, Wakelin, Lavery, F. Humphrey, Hammond, and J. Gray, 42; Cameron, 41; 3. A. Joslin, C. D'Aavergne, and Banks, 40. Of these Gray* increased his score to 84 and Bashford 80. Scott, Wabelin and J o«iing got into the prize list. Other scores were:—Banks, 73; Cameron and Foster, 71; Sandford, Hammond, C D'Aavergne, Anwon, Fox, W. B. Scott, Allison, Manning, 'Jollins, 1 , . Baker, and Walker did not get on well on account of the wind. In the Marlborough match, ten shots at 880 yds, Scott (Christchurch Rifles) 47, Wakelin 44, J. Gray 43, Buckleyand Bobilliard 42: W. B. Scott, W. A. Banks, and Hammond 41, Cameron and Salek 40, made the average of inners and over. To fill la the afternoon a number of men took tart in a Continnoos Match, for which prises are offered each day by title oovaxshals. The conditions are 500 yds, five shots, bulleeye Van diameter, inner 24in, hvhqp 1 " SBut, •afcer* not to count. Tyler, S*fe in the possible, and E. J3 , Auvergue
