(.FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] BEEFTON, December 8. The following are the battery returns for the past week .<—Globe, 1470z amalgam from 165 tons; Progress, 1440z amalgam for the week; Inglewood, 98oz amalgam from 60 tons; Fiery Cross, loloz amalgam from 87 tons. ■ Inkerman—The mine manager reports: —"The north eurface level has been extended 9ft, the total to date being 185 ft. There 13 no stone in the face at present, but there is a reef track country the full -width of the drive and a stream of water coming from it. During the week, when prospecting on the surface north of the workings, I got golden stone from 12in to 16in thick. I have traced it about 80ft in length. It appears to be a cross reef running about three points to the south of east ami about 80ft ahead of the end of the present surface level. The stone in the etopes above the bottom level is small but will pay to take out, as it is good. The reef in the atopes above the surface level is from 4in- to 3ft wide. The stone is showing gold freely. Seventy-three feet of Btoping has been done for the week. There is nothing fresh to report from the south lease, and am still driving for solid stone. Am getting ready to sink a winze on the stone south of the main shatt. Ten feet has been sunk in the main shaft, the total depth being 110 ft. I have about 35 tons Of stone in the paddocks ready tor the battery. I landed the winding engine in Slab Hut creek on Monday afternoon. The contractor has get his bush tracks cleared from the creek to the mine ready to bring the engine. The timber for the poppet heads is all ready so that in a very few weeks the next level , <will be opened. I expect to resume crushing about the 20th inst." Besolution—A small run of antimony stone has now been traced on the surface for a distance of 100 ft.
mine manager reports :— " The north -winze ia down 12ft, with a reet lft thick, carrying fair gold. Two men are prospecting near the north boundary, and I have obtained 3tone from which good prospects have been obtained. I shall be able to report further on the new find next week when more work has j been done on.it.'* I With; the exception of a slight sport in Golden Leads early in the week the share market has been utterly lifeless, and will probably continue so to well into the aew year. The absence of mine managers' reports is sumcientfy indicative of the backward condition of the mines. Welcome—The battery will be started to-morrow on a small parcel of fairly good quality stone. • battery returns show a slight improvement, which is expected to increase as the better portion of the block is approached. .tJnited Italy (Lyell)— The registered office of this Company has been removed from Lyell to Keerton, W. Q. Cal« lings here having been appointed legal manager. , • .■'■•'"■.■• ■"■': '■'"' • Stimulated no doubt by the favorable result obtained from the School of Mines* test of the Golden Lead stuff, several other Companies have had; small testa made of the quality of their stone, but aa the parcels only extended to a few ounces ia weight, the teets are not of any great importance, though some of the results were very high. Jfothing further has yetf transpired , relative to the recently reported seizure of supposed stolen amalgam. The , accused is etui -in custody in Greymouth, and will be, detained there till the next sitting of the Magistrate s Court here.
A rather peculiar case is likely- to come before the Court shortly. Three persons were standing , in the street conversing about the prospects of the Progress mine, two of the parties being large shareholders in* the Company, and the tnird, a broker, mho had 1000 of the eharea in band • tor sale belonging to one of the two present. Some chafing ensured, when the broker said he could sell a thousand at £1 each. Mr A., who is a Director of the Company, thereupon said he would take them, but Upon the broker proceeding to enter the sale in his notebook the buyer declared that he was only 1 joking, and repudiated the transaction. The broker, however, insists that there no joke about the affair, and intimated that he would enforce the sale. Here the matter tpste./for. the present/but as the usual interval allowed will lapse itt a fey* days no doubt more will ba henxd or> tUa subject then.
