Smith "seconded the amendment, which was carried, Cr. Booth dissenting.' A letter was read from Mr C. J. Rae, asking the Mayor and Councillors to attend a public meeting to be held in the Taam i street Hall on Thursday evening, the 24th instant, convened by the Railway operatives, to protest against the Railway Employes, Insurance BilL The letter was received, , and it was decided to comply with the request. Mr W.. G. Walker, Clerk to the Sydenham Licensing Committee, wrote acknowledging the receipt of the Council's letter, stating that it was decided not to pay after the end of the current half year for his services. Aβ the Under Secretary for Justice would probably communicate with him on the subject, he would for the present refrain from commenting on the subject of the letter. The letter of the applicant was ultimately referred to the Works Committee. [ The Works Committee reported that Mr Murray-Ayneley had placed under offer to the Council until the 20th November lots J, 12, 18, and 24, situate between Queen itreet and Hawdon street for the sum of &500. The Committee thought It desirable to make the purchase forjhe purpose of extending Byron street, Klngsley street, Wordsworth street, and Coleridge street, ttt Queen street, but could not fee Its way i> recommend the purchase unless a sepfeBate rate be levied to repay the cost. A jeparate r»te of one penny in the A on the block surrounded by Colombo street. Brougham street, Waltham road, and Barlyle street would produce £460. The Drainage Board had requested the Council %o lay. about twelve chains of the lain pipes supplied for reconstructing the Storm water drain in Kingsley street in a new drain to be made alone Queen, street to Carlyle street, instead of in Klngeley 'street, as at first proposed, and suggested if the proposal was carried out that the drain in Kingsley street, from Hawdon street to the Waltham road, be filled up. The Committee approved oi the proposal, which would cost about £24. The Committee could not see its way to recommend that expenditure and to fill up the old drain, but recommended that the Board be informed that if it will construct the (new drain the Council would agree to fljl tip the old one. A joint report of the Foreman of Works and the Inspector of Nuisances, naming the street side channels that required to be concreted for 'sanitary purposes, was laid upon the liable. The report was adopted. I The Finance Committee reported that the receipts slece last meeting had been :— General account, £30 9s Od: loan account, jj&37 10s; separate accounts, £51 2s 8a; i'total, £149 2s Bd. Accounts to the amount of £489 11s were recommended to be passed for payment. The whole of thje Council's property on the Hazeldean road been sold in allotments, and brought I the sum of £433, the amount of reserve put upon It by the Council. The report was adopted. '/;..-
