DUNEDIN NOTES.

[FROM OUR OOBR-f-PO-mSHT.] beptember 17- ---, Our Hunt Club races passed off well, being favoured by lovely weather, and most of the contests being of an interest," ing character. Speculators, too. were lively, the sum of £6785 passing through the totalisator, or --82500 more thftnlasp year. The- new* arrangements fqr working the machine proved to be an elaboration of the method employed on your racecourse, the novelty being that at any of the three windows (there will be six when completed) any or all of the horses can be backed. You will doubtless have received full details of the racing per Press agency, so I need make only,» few comments on the salient points of the gathering. Garryowen's victory in the opening event waa partly due to over-con-fidence on Mr Smeraoh's part, who thonght -Maxwelton held Garry safe in the run home, and partly to Mr Cox's admirably judged rush at the finish. Had luck stuck to Maxweltoa right through the meeting, for though he contested four more events he failed to do more than run third in two of them. St. Malo'a condition enabled him to shown clear "pair of heels to his half-dozen . opponents, to the Kensineton Handicap, and he would have secured the Shorts Handicap also, had not Don Pedro had a clearer...nan up the straight than Mr Clifford's horse had. Both these horses were sent sway badly at the start, and they pace in getting to the head of the field so quickly as they did. Quibble ran a good hors?in the bigger handicap, but did not improve later on. Wolverine's forward position till hear the end of the Kensington Handicap prepared us for his victory in the Telegraph Handicap on the second day, while Occident was as well as could be expected when his backward condition is considered. Both these horste are capable of .much improvement before your Spring Meeting comes off. St. James was a bit of a dlsappolntmeut.biit he- also is on the gross side as yet.' paddy Longlegs showed capital form Jr. the Tadly-Ho Handicap, and won ea9ily,but Mexicos victory, in the Hunt Club Handicap was somewhat flukey, owing to three or four of his antagonists baulking find letting Jiim get away. Wait-mgi ran consistently throughout, and Poole well deserved Jus win in the final. event. Little Shamrock's third to the Shorts was looked < on-as due entirely to his getting the best-of : s bad Start, but that the gray possesses some pace was shown by the handsome manner in which he put down Don Pedro, Mon -j-onp, Quibble, and Ixion, in the Welter Handicap. . Secretary. effected a great surprise in the Hurdle Handicap on the second day, the horse having been loosed on as done for months' past. The_Trots were both won easily, though in the first Frolicsome would have given Pirate a doing but for breaking repeatedly. The following net amounts were paid by the. Dunedin Jockey Club in connection with the Hunt Club meeting:—Mr A. G. Cox, £8510s: Mr G. B. Woodman, -876; Mr G. H. Clifford, £61155; Mr C. Turnbull, £57; Hon. G. M'Leaiv £52,55; .Mr R. Kfldare, £45 105; MrJ. Poole,; £42 15a; Mr J. Twomey, £38j Mr J. Jeffs, £88} Mr G. H. MOlure, £33 5s ; Mr J. Ooasan, £30 .8s; Messrs M. and J. Allen, £14 ss; Mr E. MKewen, £118s; Mr G. Merewetheiv £9 10s; Mr J. Stephenson, £_los; MrH. L. Johnson, £4155; Mr H. J. Smerdon, £i ISs; Mr W.'Roclcford, £415 r Messrs M. and C. Hobbs, £415; Mr C. W. Hensball, £415 a; Mr M. M'Larftn, _ft2l7s: Mr J. Black, £118s; ■ Mr D. Price, £I;—total,1 ;—total, £631168.

At a meeting of the Stewards of the Jockey Club, held last evening,, it was resolved that the riders of Erebus and Tramp ba informed of their misconduct in racing home after running round one of the jumps in the' Hunt Club Cup, and that they are liable to be brought before the Ste*vards and heavily fined for same, and that any repetition of such conduct on the Dunedin course will , subject • riders to severe censure and a heavy fine. .

Aletter was received from Mr Alexander who had made a complaint against the bookmakers Asher and Woods, on Friday, for not paying him a bet in accordance with totalisator odds as laid, stating that they had now paid the debt, and asking the Club to remove the disqualification. Resolved, that the application be declined, and that Mr Campbell be informed that it was a mistake that he, as taker of the odds, was not disqualified at the same time, which will certainly be the case in future. This refers to the matter set out in Press telegraphed reports of i*heracemeetinar. ' * „•'
