AUCKLAND, September 20. A requisition was presented to Mr J. H. Upton to-day, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the Mayoralty. Mr Upton consented to the request. A conference of the laymen of the Church of England in this district, opened last evening, was closed to-night. The subjects discussed during the conference were the provincial constitution of the Church, social reform, and Church finance. Dr. Cowie, Anglican Bishop of the diocese, presided. GISBOBNE, September 20. The statement of J. K. Scott, a bank* rupt, shows assets J&1518, secured creditors .£1709, unsecured .£2247. At the B.M. Court, "Wm. Edwin Bannister, late clerk in the Postal Department, was committed on two fnrther charges of having defrauded the Government by means of money orders. The other charges against accused were dismissed. k< .)
