CRUEL TREATMENT OF SLAVES.
CHINESE SECRET SOCIETIES
FIGHTING IN TONQUIN.

Received September 9th, 1.30 p.m. Thursday Island, September 9. It is reported that slavery of the cruellest form has been permitted by the Rajah of the Island of Lombak. Horrible barbarities are said to have been committed by the Arabs on runaway slaves. Twenty-four members of Chinese secret societies have been arrested, six sentenced to death, eleven to be flogged, and in the remaining cases sentence has not been passed. Operations against the rebels at Tonquin are progressing steadily and successfully. In a recent conflict tbe French troops killed eighteen of the rebels,
