THEATRE ROYAL.
"OLIVER TWIST." " Oliver Twist" was produced last night by the Ogden Company at the Theatre Royal. The title role was filled by Baby Ogden with a great deal of power and success throughout the piece. Miss Helen Fergus gave a very powerful pourtrayal of the character of Nancy, which showed that in parts requiring the delineation of strong emotion Miss Fergus is thoroughly at home. She was very good indeed in the scene with Rose Maylie, and that with Bill Sykes immediately preceding the murder. Mr Ogden played the park of Fagin, but made the mistake of delineating him as of foreign extraction. Had the piece been one of the American dramas of the present day his interpretation would have been correct, but as it was the character smacked too strongly of the German-American to be truthful. Mr Marshall was appropriately ruffianly in his make-up for Bill Sykes, but his impersonation of the part went no further. Mr Harry Power was thoroughly at home in the part of the Artful Dodger, and both sang and danced in a way that revived pleasant memories of opeia-bouffe days here. Mr Smith was appropriately described in the bill as " The Mysterious' in that he appeared at times during the piece without any apparent reason so far as the development of the plot was concerned. In the first act what is known as a musical olio was introduced, in which Miss Parn well, who has a nice, fresh sympathetic voice, sang very well indeed, "111 take you home again, Kathleen," and Mr Power also sang a comic song well. Baby Ogden elicited loud applause by her singing, " Please give mc a penny." To-night " Uncle Tom's Cabin," with Baby Ogden as Eva, is announced.
