(.PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.] AUCKLAND, August 6. The Auckland Presbytery have decided to present an address of welcome to Principal Bainey when he visits this city. "WELLINGTON, August 6. All the shipping lowered their flags halfmast to-day, as a mark of respect to the late Captain Hansby, who was highly esteemed here. The Chief Justice left to-day overland for Auckland, where he will temporarily take the work of the Supreme Court. A Syndicate has been formed since the withdrawal ofCobb and Co. to run 'busses in opposition to the tramway. The complete Customs return for July is .£126,015. against .£98,647 for June, and .£95,984 for July last year. NELSON, August C. At a meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to-night, a letter was read from the Defence Department in reply to one from the Board, asking for the maintenance of families of convicted persons. It was stated, in reply that the Department could not think of providing for the families of prisoners, as such a course would be a premium to crime. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, an important decision was given by Mr Turnbull, E.M., in the case of Oakey v Soott Thompson, a claim for goods, including fancy goods supplied to defendant's wife. Defendant stated that he forbade his wife to obtain goods on credit, and the Magistrate said it was an unfortunate case, but he must nonsuit plaintiff, with costs. EEEPTON", August 6. Walter Ashman, a sharebrcker, well known in Auckland, Nelson, and other parts of the colony, dropped dead yesterday evening. He waa doing business on 'Change up to 5 p.m., was taken ill about seven, and died an hour later. TIMARU, August 6. Alexander Sinclair, builder here for the last fourteen years, leaves to-day for Melbourne through lack of business. The Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder, and the Caledonian Society presented addresses of regret at his going. DUNEDIN, August G. At a large meeting , of the Tailoresses Union to-night it was decided, notwithstanding the action of tte Manufacturers' Association, to proceed to the consideration of the log. The date of it 3 coining into operation is to be afterwards settled. There are now about 650 names on the books as members of the Union.
