Typhoid in Wellington.—Our Wel« lington correspondent telegraphs; — " Typhoid fever is still very prevalent in Wellington, the assertion of the doctorto the contrary notwithstanding. The latest victim is Mr C. Rous Marten, Editor of the New Zealand Tinies. The attack is fortunately a mild one."
Post Office Appointments.—The following appointments of Postmasters have lately been made in the Post Offices of the Christchurch district:—C. O'Malley at Dromore, A. H. Blackburn at Methven, J. Hunter at Ruapuna; J. Sutherland Russell's Flat, R. Stewart at Springburn, and W. Bourke at Waikari. Dromore ia a new post office. The Attack on a Convict.—On !____•' day next the convict Shine, who kicked a prisoner in a most brutal manner in Lyttelton Gaol, will be brought up at the Lyttelton B.M. Court, the injured man having sufficiently recovered to allow the preliminary proceedings to be taken. Nobth Cantebbuby Hobpital Distbict. —The North Canterbury Hospital Board having failed to make a specific allocation of the proportion of the expenditure to be contributed by the local authorities within its district in terms of the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act, 1885, an Order in Council has been made under the hand* of the Governor declaring that thetin»*: within which such allocation may be made is extended to August 9th.
Mr Sullivan's Mission.—Mr Sullivan continued his mission in the Baptist Church, Oxford terrace, last evening, when the large building was filled in every part. Mr Sullivan sang three solos, and spoke earnestly upon the [subject of conversion. He was again assisted by the Rev. W. S. Potter, and a large choir assisted in th« singing. The mission will be continued this evening. Ashbubton Public Libbabt.—At a meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council held on Monday evening, it was decided that the reading room attached to the Public Library should be opened from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Cr. J. Keir brought the matter before the Connoil at a previous meeting, and on Monday even* ing he presented a petition, bearing 148 signatures, in favor of his motion. Literary Society. — The V.M.C.A. Literary Society held its usual weekly meeting on Monday evening, when about forty were present. Mr Smeatott occupied the chair. The business of the evening was to hear a paper on " Tom Hood: Poet and Humorist," by Mr E. Beacham. Ths paper was muoh enjoyed' by those present* and at the conclusion, the usual oritdoisnt followed, whioh was very complimentary. The Chairman announced that thenatt item on the syllabus was " Secretary*. Box," which brought the evening to.# close. ■ . _: Church Work Society.—One of m largest ordinary gatherings this Society has held assembled at the College Libra*? last night, to hear the Rev. T. Flavelr* lecture on the "Art of Teaching." Till I Yen Archdeacon Bowen occupied tW chair. The Bey. Mr Flavell gave a. interesting and instructive address. H» dealt first of all with the preparation rf the lesson; then he touched upon th* manner in which it should be deliveredj alluded to the illustrations used, ana concluded with the application. TLangioba Voltjnteib Dbill Hall.— The plana drawn by Mr A. J. Carmichael for the Bangiora Volunteer Drill Hall have been submitted to Captain Fulton to be laid before the Committee of the corps which has been appointed to approve and adopt them. The plans provide for a building 100 ft x 55ft, the frontage being upon Victoria street. The plans are of alternative designs in brick and iron. They provide for a large entrance door with a window above it on the frontage, for walls 14ft in height, with four windowe on each. Bide. Thespecification refers to the flooring with Hin timber. The plans are intended to give plenty of strength in the building, with strong ties in the roof, and npon them it is expected that tenders will ■hortly be invited. Tbitßfhonk to Gbeexdale. — A short time ago a petition bearing seventy signatures was sent to the Hon. the PostmasterGeneral, asking that a telephone station might be established at Greendale, to connect with the Telegraph office at Darfield. A reply has been received from Sir John Hall, that the department is willing to do so on condition that a guarantee of JEIO i yeai; above the estimate, be given for five years. At a meeting of the residents held on Monday evening it was unanimously decided to accept the terms, and Messrs T. W. Adams, H. McCrostie, C. Budd and J. F. Eudd were appointed the guarantors. Railway By-laws.—ln reference to " what has been often a disputed point with passengers going out to country races by excursion trains and returning by an ordinary train, the Eailway Department have recently adopted a by-law by which "no person having paid the fare for a ticket entitling him to travel by an excursion train, or any other specified train, shall be entitled to travel by any train other than that in respect of which such fare was -- paid without previously taking out the proper ticket and paying the proper fare therefor respectively." Further, "no person holding a ticket issued for travelling for certain specific purposes shall use •> the ticket for travelling for any other 0 purpose." In the latter case any ticket ■wrongly used will be forfeited and its further use stopped. Canteebxjbt Ajiathjb Athletic Club. meeting of the Committee of the ~ above Club was held on Monday evening at Warner's HoteL The date of the annual cross-country race was fixed for Saturday, September 7th. The Sub-committee was instructed to try and arrange for the race to be held on the New Brighton racecourse. The date of the spring meeting at Lancaster Park, has been altered to Friday and Saturday; November Bth and 9th. It was decided to give two prizes for the high and long jumps and putting the weight, which events in previous years only had one prize each. H. Morten, T. Maude and Q. S. Phillips were elected members of the Club. Endeavors are tobe made to hold an amateur theatrical performance on the evenings of the spring meeting if possible. A letter was received stating that the members intend to give a prize for the officials' race at the annual sports. Pbksektation at Cust.—An influential gathering was held at the Cust Hotel on Saturday evening, to bid farewell to Mr J. Mac Donald, who for the past four years has been Btationmaster at Cust, and has now received departmental promotion. The notice of Mr Mac Donald's departure had been very brief; but notwithstanding this; and the. wintry nature of the weather, there was a large muster of the chief residttts of Cost. The Eev. E. H. Wyatt was in the chair, and read an address, which referred tOuihejsjreafc and general regret 'fhßpiral by Mr Mac Donald's removal. He had always placed hia services at the disposal of any local or charitable object, and had initiated* erioket and lacrosse club?. He had shown such kindness and geniality in all the relations of private life that he would leave behind him many attached friends. The Rev. Mr Wyatt then presented to Mr Mac Donald, in the name of a large number of subscribers, a purse of sovereigns with which to purchase some, remembrance of his friends at Cust. The health of the guest was heartily drunk, and after a sympathetic reply from Mr Mac Donald the meeting terminated. Ltttkltok YoTpre Men's Club.—The half-yearly meeting of the Lyttelton Young Men's Club was held in the Club's rooms, Colonists' Hall, ou Monday. There ""as a good attendance of members. The chair was occupied by the President (Mr G. E. Collins).C The election of. officers resulted as follows .—President, Mr G. E. Collins (te-elected); Vice-President, Mr l>. Page (re-elected); Secretary, Mr W. Olliver (re-elected); Treasurer, Mr D. Hahar (re-elected). There were also twelve Commi&eenien and two trustees elected, who, with the officers of the Club, ■will in future carry on the whole management. The President congratulated the Club on its great progress. There are aow some eighty to ninety members, and lately the meebers have formed a draughts and chess class, also a quadrille assembly. At is intended to start a night school, and a meeting of thoee interested will be called shorLly. A first-class teacher is to oe engaged, and this school promises to be * JTf** success. Addington Wobkshops Bakd.— The half-yearly meeting of the above Band took place at the Hallway Hotel on Monday last, the chair being occupied by Mr Hooper. The Secretary read the balancesheet for half-year, which showed the receipts to have been JEIO6 7e 3d, expenditure .£79 18s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £26 9s Id. The business being finished, light refreshments were handed round, and some capital songs by Messrs Broome, Hooper, MeCullough, Powell, Oliver and Larcombe brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Contbact pop. Coal. — We are informed by Mr Brown, the local manager of the Grey Valley Coal Company, that they have concluded arrangements with the New Zealand Shipping Company for another twelve months' coal contract. The quantity required is 30,000 tons. The fact of this being the fifth year that this Company has been the succesful contractors is a high testimonial to the splendid steam raising qualities of the Grey Valley coal. St. John Ambulance Association.—The examination of men in " First Aid to the Injured" took place on Monday eight, at the. City Council Chambers, with the following result:—Of the six candidates who presented themselves, four—viz., Messrs Hindman, Merewether, Touch and Turner—passed, and obtained the first certificate. No. 4 got 100 marks, the maximum being 110; No. 3, 97; No. 2,96; No. 5, 89; and No. 1 failed to pass, obtaining only 41 marks. Mr G. Fuller, of the Fire Brigade, who was unable to attend the final examination last year, was examined the same evening, and obtained full marks, winning the medallion. The examiner (Dr. Irving) reported that the bandaging was not very good, excepting that done by No. 6. Scottish Rifles.—The annual social gathering of the Scottish Eifles was held last night in Hobbs' Buildings, when there was a good attendance of the members of the Corps and visitors, including Mr Cunningham, Colonel Lean and the officers and members of the other corps, especially the Navals, from Lyttelton, who were present in great f orca. The prizes in connection with the corps were presented as follows : —Cunningham medal, Sergeant W. Fra3er; Cunningham trophy, Lance-corporal Walker; Hobson cup, Sergeant W. Fraser; Class Firing Aggregate—Private Hastie, Lance-corporal Walker, Sergeant Campbell, Sergeant Gray, Sergeant W. Fraser. Class Firing, First Stage—Privates Haig, Maxwell, Turpin, Sergeant A. Fraser, Privates E. and W. Halliday. Attendance Prizes - Privates Phillips, Eichardson, Duniop, Sturrock, Philp, Blake, Morrow. Spoon Matches —Piper Hedley, Lancecorporal Caldwell, Sergeant A.. Burnett. Press Prize —Sergeant W. Fraser. Wood's Trophy—Piper Hedley. A very excellent programme of songs, interspersed with dancing, followed, and every one most thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Amongst the features of the evening was the dancing of the Highland Fling by Mr D. McLean, of Laghmor.
