RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening. There were present—The Mayor (Mr E. R. Good), Crs. Stephens, Sansom, Gull'ver, Manning, Ivory, Keir, and Jennings. Apologies were made for the absence of Crs. Cone and Luxton. A circular was read from the Charitable Aid Board notifying that the Council's portion of the maintenance for the current year was £54 3s 6d. Received. A letter was read from Messrs T. Home, W. A. List, and P. Bourke drawing the Council's attention to a ditch of stagnant water near their dwellings. Tne matter was referred to the Works Committee. The Works Committee reported that the contracts for cleaning out the drains in the south nart of the borough were all but completed. The work decided by the Council in Church street north had been done by the day men. A crack had been discovered in the culvert in Ashley street, but a buttress had been put in to prevent further damage. Shingle has been put in Blackett street East, and the footpath covered with screenings. The contractor for screening shingle ha* completed hi* work. The report was adopted. The Surveyor's report stated that a large number of rate notices had been delivered, and the rest were to be out shortly. Only sixty-six dogs have so far been registered this ye<ar. It was resolved that the same owners o£ unregistered dogs be summoned, and the report was then adopted. The financial statement showed the receipts for the month to have been £27 2s 4d; debit balance £187 Os od ; and amounts were passed for payment amounting to £102 9s Id. The burgess list for 1839-90 was duly signed by the Mayor and the Councillors present. " It was reported that several persons are draining into the side channels, and the Clerk was instructed to give them notice to discontinue the practice. Cr. Jennings referred to the matter of having some name-plates at the principal streets, and stated that they would cost about os apiece.. It was decided to empower the Works Committee to spend about £5 in putting up'the same, and Cγ. Jennings was thanked-for the trouble he had taken in the matter. The Mayor stated that the Resident Magistrate had called his attention to Jthe necessity for a new Court-house for the town, and it was decided to write to tbe Hon. E. Richardson on the matter, asking him to. urge the Government to erect a suitable building on the Post-office section. The Council adjourned after passing a vote of thanks to the Mayor.
