MINING NEWS.
[Bγ TeliEgbaph.] [from our correspondent.] BEEFTON, August 4. The following are the battery returns for the past week: — Keep it-Dark —2290zs amalgam from 165 tons stone. Globe —1430zs amalgam from 165 tons. Inkerman — 1230zs amalgam from 50 tons. Inkerman —The mine manager reports: —" The bottom level south from the shaft has been extended 12ft for the week, the bottom distance being 132 ft. The stone in the face is 2£ft wide, carrying good gold. I expect to break through into the winze being sunk on the new reef in about 3ft more driving. The north drive of the bottom level has been driven 4ft for the ■week, the total distance driven from shaft being 109 ft. The stone in this face is making wider, there being 10in of stone in the face at present, and it appears to be widening out. There is good gold to be seen in the- stone. Be the stopes, 57ft of stoping has been done for the week north and south above the bottom level, the stone showing in the different faces from to 3ft wide. Gold is to be seen in each face. Be the winze, it has been sunk s£ft for the week, the total distance snnk from the bottom of the level being 37ft, and from the surface 77ft. lam following the hanging wall down, there being no sign of any foot wall. The stone is highly payable. Be the shaft, the contractors have nearly finished the excavation round the collar of the shaft, and will start to sink early next week. I scraped the top plates to-day with the result given. I did not start crushing until 10.20 on Wednesday. I have got another outcrop of stone on the surface about 500 ft south of the present workings, and will put a man on on Monday to prospect it."
Keep-it-Dark —There was a bit of a scare in these shares on Friday night, owing to the fact that a horse of mullock appeared in the reef on the low level. The thing was in no way exceptional, as precisely the same feature appeared in all the other levels at the same spot, but the circumstance was made the most of by thoee who were interested in bringing the shares down, and they went abont offering them as low as 275, giving the reason for the decline. Very few were bought, however, and I do not think many (if any) sales were effected below 31s. Last night it was reported that the mullock had cut out of the reef, and that there was 10ft of clean payable stone on the new low level, so that the reputation of the mine now stands as well as ever.
Inglewood —As the general clearing-up t>ok place on Tuesday, and the battery would not start again for a day or two later, there are no battery returns to-day.
Inangahua Low Level Tunnel — The bonus prospectors have not, so far, met with the run of stone they believe to exist, but are still engaged in cross-cutting from the main level.
Wealth of Nations —The memorandum of registration of the re formed Company is published, and shows a good body of shareholders, scattered over all parts of the colony. Hard to Find—The mine manager reports : —" I have been engaged this week in starting the rise to connect the level with the bottom of the winze. lam at present up Bfc. The stone is about 10in thick, carrying splendid gold. I consider it fully ounce stone. I have also extended the level, going north 6ft. There is alaout loin of stone in that end, with fair gold in it."
Sir Francis Drake —The mine manager reports : —" Since my last I have sunk the winze 7ft for the week, making the total depth 18ft. There is gold to be seen in the stone, and no sign of the f ofcwall. I commenced on Tuesday to sink the winze north, which is down 2ft. The size of the reef is about 2ft, and gold is to be seen in the stone. I shall finish laying the rails to the receiving paddock on Monday. I have a total of seven men employed in the mine."
Scotia —The mine manager reports:— "Since my last, driving the main level hae been continued, the distance done for the week being 10ft, making , the full distance driven north of the winze 187 ft. The reef is broken but carries good gold, and I think it will make more solid in a few feet. In the etopes the faces are looking well, and good gold is to be seen in each, equal to the stone taken out in the last crushing. There are now 30 tons of stone in the Company's paddock, and I shall soon have everything in order." Contrary to expectations Saturday was not unusually busy. Scotia's fell away slightly from the previous day's quotations, receding to about 11s to Hβ 6d and but little business was, therefore, done in them. Inkermans, on the other hand, hardened, buyers offering 15s 6d and sellers asking a shilling more. The following are the sellers' prices at the midday meeting of the Association: —Gallants, 2s 9d; Globe, 225; Inkermans, 16s; Inglewood, Is; Just In Time, Is; Jubilee, 94; Dark, 30s; Lone Star, 2s lid; No. 2 South, 3s 9d; Progress, 303 6d; Eewards, lid; Scotia, 12s; Specimen Hill, 7s 7d; Welcomes (old), 12s 9d.
