An example of the keenness with which "genteel" employment ie being now sought after in this colony, is afforded by the contest which baa just taken place for the position of librarian of the Wellington Atheneenm. There were no fewer than 68 applicants in all, some resident in Auckland, Christchurch, and jDunedin. Some of the candidates (our Wellington correspondent informs us) had recommendations from Lord Eosebery, tbe Judge-Advocate of Sootland, and other distinguished personages. Among the applicants were lawyers, journalists, clergymen, chemists, doctors, professors of music, &c. The appointment has been conferred on Mr Alfred Masters, of Wellington.
