WOMEN AND HOTELS.

TO THS SDITOR OF THS PRESS.

Sm,—Your sub-leader on the licensing of women to manage hotels is very unsatisfactory, and shows a want of the practical in it, which I will point out briefly. (Ist) From the nature of the trade a great number of those who attend at such places are the worst part of our population (to put it mildly), especially so when it comes to a point of management requiring great force of character, a point which you will admit as a rule does not belong to women, a point, too, in which I have known women to fail '■ in hotels in this city. (2) The nature, of the business further applies, being so degrading that no woman who° has any respect for herself would engage in it, and this is why the question of barmaids has been so much discussed. I venture to say the Editor would never sanction a daughter or a sister, or any other female under his control, to go into such a position. 3rd. Most women who want to go into this business are widows with families, and of all places to raise a family surely it is the worst. Now, Mr Editor, I dare say other reasons could be found, but I am pleased to find the sense of the country is against you in its laws and in its morals, and where morals are concerned always will be. —Yours, &c, Well-Wisher. [Our correspondent entirely misses the point at issue. We were not discussing the queation of whether women generally should be allowed to keep hotels or to serve behind the bar. We were simply pointing out the anomalous state of the law which permits widows and unmarried women to hold licenses, but disqualifies a married woman who holds property in her own right from managing her own property.—Ed. Pbess.]
