MR. J. J. FLETCHER.
The death of Mr J. J. Fletcher, of the firm of Fletcher, Humphreys and Co., will be heard of with regret by a wide circle of friends, for although Mr Fletcher, from his retiring habits, was not in any sense a public man, yet his probity, hijrh sense of mercantile honor, and general integrity had made him the type of an English merchant, and had caused him to be widely respected amongst his commercial friends and the citizens generally. The late Mr Fletcher came out to Nelson in the ship John Phillips in the year 1853, and some little time afterwards entered as a partner in the well-known firm of Morrison, slanders and Co. About the year 18C5 hi came down to Canterbury, and established a branch of the busims. in Christchurch under the style of Morrison, Sclanders, Fletcher and Co., in which he remained until 1882. In this year he entered into partnership with Mr George Humphreys who, for many years, had acted as his manager. These two gentlemen have carried on business together as merchants up to the time of Mr Fletcher's decease. Ie will
thus be seen that the late Mr Fletcher was one of the oldest merchants in Canterbury. Being of a very retiring disposition, Mr Fletcher never took any prominent part in public affairs, but his kindly disposition always made him ready to assist in any charitable object. He leaves a widow and five children.
