GLENROY COAL COMPANY

A meeting of. the above Company was held last night at the Clarendon Hotd. Mr Quaife was voted to the chair, and informed the Company that he and Mr Smart and Mr Gardiner had been to the mine, and they all stated to the meeting that the prospects of the Company anpeared all that could be desired, and If energetically worked it wouldprobably torn out to be a very extensive coalfield. The following report was read by Mr Smart:— "Gentlemen, —I beg to inform you that I accompanied Messrs Quaife and Gardiner, two of your Directors, to the Company's ground last week, in accordance with tine proposition agreed upon at the last meet* Ing of shareholders. After crossing about fifty chains of sandstone strata the flttt outcrop of coal occurs close to the southeastern boundary of the ground, and from thence upwards there is a succession of coal outcrops to the north-western boon-, dary. The upper seams, like the Brockier seam, are nearly vertical, and as they approach the south-east are much natter, and are dipping in a south-easterly direction, and running according to the usual bearing of all the seams through the die* A trict. It is impossible from the oufa,*s crops to give the true measurement " of these seams, but two, I should Hay, are over 6ft in thickness, and several others from that downward!. I saw several holes and small drivee following the course of the creeks, asd sunk principally in the broken ground. These are of no practical value, as, although there was coal in every hole, it had not been sunk through to determine its thickness. It will be necessary to start a main drive near the south-eastern botuv ] dary, and as the various seams of coal are cut through they can be worked, and the maiu drive continued as required. About thirty chains of a tram will connect the main drive with the present road, and I expect the first seam, which is an altered coal, would be cut in about twenty yard*. Before leaving the Malvern: a letter was sent out by your Chairman of Dine* tors to the Rakaia Road Board, requesting them to reform and metal the branch road leading to the ground. (Signed.) W. Smart, Mining Engineer." The following propositions were carried unanimously:—l. That the original shareholders have seven days more time from this to pay original calls, and that toe same be advertised in two daily papers. 2. That Mr Quaife be Treasurer. 3. That the Directors should pioceed at once with the drive. 4. That thle meeting is of opinion that the previous Chairman and shareholders who made such severe remarks on Messrs Baynes Bros, about this coalfield being "bogus" will, perhaps, j now see their way to withdraw such unjust charges. A vote of thanks closed the meeting.
