DOINGS IN PARLIAMENT.

In the Legislative Council among the petitions was one presented by Sir Q. Wnitmore from a number of the medical praotitioners in Christchurch against the proposed Medical Practitioners Bill. The Fire and Marine Insurance Companies Bill was passed. The Law of Libel Bill paeaed its second reading. The Medioal Practitioners Bill did not get on bo swimmingly, and considerable opposition being shown to it, the debate was oa the motion of Mr Walker adjourned for a fortnight to enable the Bill to be more freely circulated among the medical profession. The Counoil adjourned at 4.30 p.m.

In the Lower House the Auckland Gas Company's Bill and the New Zealand Bank Act Amendment Bill were read a second time. The Joint Bills Committee reported that the Christchurch Gas Bill was a private Bill and not in accordance with the Standing Orders relating to Local Bills. Mr Perceval moved that the report be referred back to the Committee to state their reasons, but the amendment was lost by 42 to 33, and the report ordered to he on the table. A Select Committee was appointed to report on petitions relating to claims for military land grants. The Fire and Marine Insurance Companies Bill was received from the Legislative Council and read a first time. Iα the evening the debate on the Representation Bill *as resumed. The Hare system found able advocates in Mr Saunders and Sir John Hall. The latter, in the course of hi 3 speech, said he was bound to say that single electorates had not worked out as well as he expected, and he regretted having initiated that system. Mr Tanner advocated retaining the present system of voting with provincial districts as electorates, but said he would prefer the Hare system to retaining the •present single electorates. Mr Walker strongly opposed the Bill. Mr Fulton moved the adjournment of the debate, which was objected to by Mr Ballance and others, but supported, by the Premier, and carried by 48 to 38 votes. The House rose at 10.55 p.m.

Thbateb Botal —The programme of the preceding evening was repeated laat night at the Theatre Royal by the Hugo Minatrela, when there was a large audience. Toe company will appear again this evening.
