SYDENHAM COUNCIL

An ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Langdown), and Crs. Gledhill, Bowden, Booth, T. E. Taylor, W. White, jun., Muffitt, Jacques, and Forrester. Messrs Mclntyre and Small, tenants of the Council, attended in reference to matters connected with their leases. Messrs Inglow and Peacock wrote, asking the Council to consider the state of the right-of-way known as Peacock Place. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. From the Ashburton County Council, forwarding copy of a resolution passed re Mr Hislop s Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill. The letter was received. Mr R. M. Taylor, M.H.R., forwarding a copy of the new Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill. It was decided that the Council meet the next evening to consider the Bill. Mr H. Norman, Hon. Secretary of the Railway Fire Brigade, wrote, enclosing a return of the fires that had taken place in Sydenham during the past half-year. There had been two fires in that period. The letter was received. The Works, Sanitary and Lighting Committee recommended the acceptance ot a number of tenders for supplies. The Committee had instructed the Foreman of Works upon the quality of the pipes received from the Drainage Board for the Kingsley street drain, and in consequence of his report being unfavorable they could not recommend that the pipes be used for the purpose. They could not recommend the erection of a lamp at the corner of Andrew and Burlington streets. The Borough Inspector recently reported upon some cases of infectious diseases which seemed to point to the necessity of controlling the sale of milk in the borough. The report was adopted, with the exception of the tender recommended for the supply of broken metal. This tender was objected to on the ground that it was received after the advertised time. It was withdrawn, on tbe understanding that fresh tenders be called. Tbe Finance Committee reported that the rect ipts since last meeting had been— General account, £62 12s 9d ; interest account, £61 6s 9d; loan account, 4s 2d; total, £118 13s 4d. Accounts to the amount of £124 3s Sd weie recommended to be passed for payment. The Bank balances were:—Cγ.—Separate account, £222 2s 3d; interest account. £223 14a lid; loan account, £8274 19s Bd. Dr.—General account, £93712* 10d. The report was adopted. The Council then proceeded to consider the estimates for the current year.
