RUGBY UNION.

A meeting. of the Committee of the Rugby Union was held at Warner's Hotel lastevening, when there were present Dr. tfoorhouse (in the chair), and Messrs F. D. Kesteven, Garrard, W. J. Uotterill, Beswick, Hoban, Cohen, Fuller, and G. Harris (Hon. Secretary). A letter was read from the Secretary of the Native Football Team, offering to accept 50 per, cent, of the gross takings for a match with the Canterbury Union, the same as was agreed upon with the Otago Rugby Union. They expected to arrive at the Bluff from Melbourne on July 31st. They would play Otago on the 10th August, and proposed to play Canterbury on the following Saturday, 17th August. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Beswick, that the terms and date proposed by the Native Team be accepted. The Sydenham Football Club wrote, asking that in the event of wet weather prevailing on the date of their fixture with East Christchurch on J .ancaster Park on July 6th they should be allowed to use another ground. Mr Hoban said that it was not so much this particular case which his Club aeked the Union to consider, but whether it I should interfere in all cases of wet weather on dates of matches. ! Mr Beswick said that if fixtures were interfered with the Clubs would not get through half their matches. It was pointed out that as present constituted the Union could not interfere. The Chairman said the worst grounds here were "gems" besides those he had played on in Glasgow. It was decided after discussion to reply that the Union could not interfere. Correspondence was read in connection with an appeal against the umpire's decision on a try gained by Greenwood in the Merivale v Christchurch match. After a long discussion, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Fuller, seconded by Mr Beswick—"That the protest of the Christchurch Club be upheld, upon the ground that there was no claim by the opposite side, as provided under rule 42." An appeal by Lin wood against a try gained by Marr for the Sydenham Second in the Junior Cup Match was dismissed, the fee to be returned. An appeal by the Linwood Second against a try scored by Thompson in their match with the Sydenham Third, on the ground that it was gained after the referee's whistle was. sounded, was upheld. Sydenham Fourth appealed for a try disallowed by the referee in their match against" Cambridge Second. It was alleged that the ball had been touched down on the goal line, but a try was not allowed, a scrum being ordered and took place five yards from the line. The try, was allowed. An account to the amount of £16 16s was passed for payment. Mr Cohen moved—"That a Subcommittee, consistin :of the Rev. J. Hoatson, and Messrs Cohen and Cotterill, be appointed to state a case for the English Rugby Union on points arising out of the appeal made by Christchurch in their match with Merivale, and on other points arising out of the rules." Mr Fuller seconded the motion, which was agreed to. On the suggestion of Mr Fuller, it was resolved — That Secretaries of Clubs be asked to send in names of old players who would be willing to act as umpires and referees in all matches, with a view to the Committee of the Union preparing a list. It was resolved—That the old Show Grounds, Sydenham, be obtained for the match with South Canterbury on the 20th inst., and the Secretary and Treasurer were authorised to carry out the necessary arrangements. This was all the business.
