JUNIOR CUP MATCHES.
The first contest between the East Christcb urch and Christchurch teams came oft" on Saturday on the Merivale ground. The result was rather a surprise, as the game was thought to be a gift to the Reds. The first spell was noticeable for the way in which the Yellows overran their opponents, the play being confined to the Keds , quarters during the whole spell, with the exception of a few rushes into the Yellows' territory, but the ball was never allowed to stay long there. The Yellow forwards, headed by Foster and DeMaus, carried the play back again. Heslip potted a good goal for the Yellows from the twenty-five Hag. Flavell also succeeded in scoring a try. In the second spell matters took a turn in the opposite direction, the Yellows being kept ou the defensive with the exception of the first quarter of an hour, when Flavell again placed another try to the credit of his side. After this the Keds made things very lively, giving their opponents all they knew to keep them out. The Yellows, although completely overrun during the last ten minute 3, managed to keep their line intact, the game ending in favor of East Christchurch by 5 points to nothing. The Linwood First met the Sydenham Second on the Old Show Grounds, and after a very exciting game lost by two points to one. The Sydenham started well, and took r.he ball into the Linwood twentylive, but the excellent defence of the baclcs prevented any score. The Linwood rallied, and relieved their goals, and after some play in the Sydenham twenty-live Moses scored a try, but his kick at goal was a failure. Sydenham now rallied, and. gradually took the ball to the Linwood's goal, and. the end of the spellsaw them on the goal line. With the wind at their back the Sydenham, in the second spell, played with great dash, and pinned their opponents, bat the excellent collaring of Price, Keithley and Cook prevented any score. At last Marr took the ball from the line out, and dribbled across, making the scores equal. The Sydenham were not to be denied, and within five minutes of time Savage and Reese dribbled the ball over, the latter securing the try. He made a good attempt at goal, but the ball dropped short. The Merivale Second and Cambridge First teams tried conclusions for the first time on Saturday, and Merivale scored another win by ten points to nothing, the score beiijg seven* tries and a goal irom the field. Merivale had the best of the play all through, the Cambridge backs being unable to stop the rushes of the Merivaie forwards, who did most of the scoring. The tries were got by Pitcaithley 2. 1. Otley 1, Cook 1, White 1 and Rices 1. White kicked the goal from the Held. The Canterbury Colleye Second played against Addington and won easily.
