GRAIN SALES.

Messks Matson and Co.'s reporb for the week ending June 29th, 18S9:— The week just closed, like the former, has been of an uneventful character, values being scarcely affected in any way. In wheat London cables show values a little better, although not of sufficient importance to warrant any advance in local rates, while Californian telegrams tend to minimise the slight increase in European markets. The Interests of Canterbury growers " for the present season," chiefly depending on intercolonial trade, we have watched carefully the fluctuation in the Sydney, Queensland, Victorian and South Australian markets, and are still of opinion with growers that values will be upheld later on. Oats are not quite as firm, yet do not show any tendency to drop in price, holders continuing to hare firm faith in present rates at least being maintained.. Barley of prime quality has been mostly taken up by local maltsters, and only second quality is on the market, lines of which are readily placed at remunerative rates. Beans and peas are neither in demand or on offer at present, and no business of any consequence has been done in these. Grass seed, with the exception of a mild inquiry for cocksfoot, is almost at a standstill, and nothing much is expected to be done in them till the spring sowing. Dairy produce is without alteration, and requires at present no further mention. Potatoes are firmly held by growers for an advance, while buyers decline to operate at the rates required. Onions are now of a fancy value, and holders having things nearly all their own way buyers have to submit. At auction to-day we submitted a large catalogue of grain and produce, and had the satisfaction of placing fully two-thirds of the lines offered at prices up to market values. A keen spirit of competition was evinced, very little delay being experienced in eliciting bids, all of which were bona fide and_ in no one instance disputed ; buyers evidently knowing well what they wanted, went right up to their limit without hesitation. Our week's transactions, taken altogether, have given us every satisfaction, the depletion of the large stocks in our stores being more marked than in any previous week during the season. Quotations as follows: — Wheat—Tuscan, 3s 5d to 3s Sd; Hunter's and pearl, 3s Id to 3s 4d ; seconds, 2s Dd to 3s : chick wheat, 2s Id to 2s 6d f.o.b.
