The annual meeting of ratepayers & this district was held at the Road Boar£j office, Yaldhurst, on Tuesday last, butwaC not well attended. Mr G. Carpenter Chairman of the Road Board, presided. and in opening the meeting stated thai) it had been postponed from the first week in May, in consequence of the delay Iα getting accounts audited. The report of the Board's proceedings during the paeb year was then read, referring In detail to all money expended in each sub-divieloa and on the several roads throughout the district. The balance-sheet, duly audited, was also produced, showing receipts and expenditure as ' follows:—Balance Iα Bank on the '31st 1888 L £1513 3s 6d. Income from rates collected and other sources, including Government subsidy, £891 3s, making 3 total of £2404 6s 6d. The expenditure for the same period amounted to .£1036 4s 6d (exclusive of £176 Us 6d paid for charitable aid and hospital rate out of funds to the Board's credit at the Selwyn County Council), leaving the balance of J81368 2a, credited to the several subdivisions as fo> lows:—No. 1 ward, -677 Is lid; No. 3 ward, £10 2s 9d; No. 3 ward, .£342 7s lid I No. 4 ward, £570 0s 6d; No. 5 ward, £359 8s lid. The Chairman in referring ta the report and balance sheet, called, attention to the satisfactory condition of the Board's finances, the expenditure having excdfeded the income by only £150, which was a better result than had been before obtained. The ratepayers mlgho also congratulate themselves on the fact that moat of the roads were in first-rate order, whilst the rate struck was not 4 heavy one, and further, that the Charitable Aid rate had been defrayed oat of funds due to the Board, instead of striking a special rate, as had been done in neigh* boring districts. The road rate to be struck for the current year would be as last year, but would not realise so large on amount, because of the decrease m the valuation roll. Mr Johnstone moved-* " That the balance-sheet of accounts and report be adopted and passed." Mr John Taylor, in seconding the resolution, said i* was a matter for regret that so few of the ratepayersshould chow any interest in the Board's proceedings, ana thought the/ should at any rate make a point of attending meetings of this kind. He also referred to the clear and concise manner the accounts were presented, and to the very exhaustive report prepared and just read by the Clerk. The resolution was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. One or two questions were put to toe Chairman and satisfactorily answered.
