THE AUDITOR AND THE DIOCESAN SECRETARY.
ANOTHER REPLY. ▲t the commencement of the proceed ings of Synod yesterday the Very Rev, the Dean laid upon the table the follow ing letter, which was read, from Mi Wilberfoss :— "Christchurch, June 19th, 1889. "The Chairman, Executive Committee C.P. Trustees, Christchurch. "Sir,—l beg to officially confirm mj verbal communication to you that I find J am mistaken in the inference I drew in my report of the 14th insfc. with respect to the account in the name of Mr C. P. Cholmondeley, on folio 145 of the old deposit ledger. I find that the amount of £2750 was not re-deposited in September 30th, 1887, as I imagined, but was on January Ist of that year deposited as follows, viz., £2500 for twelve months at 6 per cent, £250 at call at 5 per cent. Conquently the amount would be available for re-depositing on January Ist, 1888. I was led into making the mistake by the fact of the account being credited with, and the interest paid half-yearly, a practice, so far as I am aware, utterly at variance with the customary treatment of fixed deposits for a period of twelve months. Since ascertaining the above I have this day inspected the deposit ledger, and find that the practice of crediting and paying interest half-yearly, and even quarterly, has been followed to a considerable extent, but not universally.—Yours faithfully "R. WILBEHFoes." " Christchurch, June 20th, 1889,, "The Chairman Church Property Trustees, " Christchurch. "Sir,—The Diocesan Treasurer, in his memorandum read before Synod last evening, has challenged the correctness of several statements contained in my report the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Church Property Trustees, and embodied In*, their memorandum recently presented to the Synod. I now beg to state that,' notwithstanding what appears in the' Treasurer's memorandum, • 1 still adhere to the correctness of every statement in my report, with the exception of the inference I drew with regard to the accounts' appearing on folio I*s of the deposit ledger, and whicn I have dealt with in a; letter, dated the 19th inst., to the Chairman of the Executive Committee. Jb'ur ther, I am willing, if Synod deems it desirable, to appear personally before; j Synod to verify and substantiate every such statement by reference to the books of accounts I inspected."
