RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening. Present—All the Councillors, the Mayor (Mr E. R. Good) presiding. The only correspondence was a request from the Clerk, asking to be supplied with the Government valuation roll. Cr. Keir, on behalf of the Works Committee, reported that the Committee had visited the railway line opposite Mr Jordan's and inspected the drainage of that place, as well as that of Church street north, and recommended that a culvert be put across Church street and the water then taken across High street and into Northbrook. It had also been suggested that Mr Buss' permission be asked to remove the pipes from opposite Jordan's to the end of Church street. The Committee had also inspected the drains in the south part of the borough, and thought it desirable that only those in which water is running should be cleaned out by the Council, viz., on the west side of the West belt, on the west sides of King street, Victoria street, and Newnham street, and the north side of the eastern portion of the South belt. It was decided that a portion of the work of cleaning the drains be offered to several defaulting ratepayers, the rest to be done by tender. With respect to the drainage of Church street North, it was resolved that Mr Buss be asked to allow the pipes across the railway line to be removed, and that he be invited to meet the Works Committee, and inspect the same. J. Bishop waited on the Council, and requested to be allowed to continue stone-breaking. The request was granted. The Clerk was instructed to forward a reply to Messrs Harper and Co.'s letter, received at last meeting, with reference to the drainage at Jordan's. Tenders were opened for the erection of a brick culvert in George street, and that of Thos. Skudder, at £57 10s, was accepted. Only one tender was received for screening shingle, and that being considered too high the Clerk was instructed to call for fresh ones. Cr. Cone then proposed the motion of which he had given notice, viz.—That the footpaths in High King street to Church street, in Victoria street to Queen street, in Ashley street to Blackett street, in Albert street to Blackett street be asphalted, kerbed, and channelled. In doing so Cr. Cone said the work was one of necessity, and would improve the footpaths considerably. He knew that several persons interested objected to pay their share of the cost, but he thought the majority would be glad to have tbe work done. Cr. Sansom seconded the motion. After some discussion as to the probable cost, and as to ways and means of paying the expense, the matter was deferred till next meeting to allow Cr. Cone to bring further information before the Council. The Mayor stated that h? had been requested to draw attention to some remarks that were made at a meeting of tradesmen held in the Road Board office re the tradesmen's picnic by the chairman (Cr. Cone) which reflected on the action of the Council ib refusing the use of the chamber for that meeting. He thought it was due to the Council that Cr. Cone should have explained the reasons why the use of the chamber had been refused, and that had not been done. Several Councillors expressed their regret that Cr. Cona had acted as he had done. Cr. Cone, in replying, stated that he had only repeated what he. had stated in the Council about the matter, and he still thought the people bad aperfect right to the* use of the room. Cr. Keir then moved, and Cr. Manning seconded —" That the Council Chambers be not let for any public or committee meetings." This motion was carried, Crs. Cone, Ivory and Jennings voting against it. A proposition that the matter should be left in the hands of the Mayor was lost. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Mayor.
