WASTE IN STARVATION.

In starvation, as the following figures show, different parts of the body lose weight in very different proportions :— Fat 97 per cent. Bpleen 63 „ „ Liver - 57 „ „ Muscles.. 3" „ ~ Blood II „ H Brain and spinal cord 0 „ „ It wQI be seen that the loss during starvation falls most heavily on the fat. Next to the fat the glandular organs suffer most. Then come the muscles; that is to say, tbe skeletal muscles, for the loss in the heart is very trifling, and obviously this organ, on account of its Importance in carrying ou the work of tbe economy, is spared as much as possible; it is, in fact, fed on the rest of the body. The same remark applies to the brain and spinal cord; in order that life may be prolonged as much as possible, these Important organs are nourished by material drawn from less noble organs and tissues. The blood suffers proportionately to the general body waste.
