The claim of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company v the Government of New Zealand, JBIIO, compensation for seven roods three perches taken for the purpose of a railway station at Morrinsville, was concluded at Hamilton to-day, when a verdict was given for plaintiffs for £90, with costs £12. The Auckland Volunteers who are to take part in the Rifle Association meeting left to day by the Gairloch for Taranaki, en route to Blenheim. It has been notified that Government have granted £200 for the purpose of holding an Easter encampment at Auckland. Thomas Bath, convicted of cattle stealing at Te iwamutu, was sentenced at the Supreme Court to-day to two years' imprisonment, with hard labor. A verdict of " Not guilty** was returned in the case of David Stewart, charged with breaking and entering at Waitakerei. Two wheat stacks belonging to Mr Saxon, farmer, Tawaki, were destroyed by fire yesterday. They are estimated to contain 1200 bushels, worth £250. They were uninsured. The origin is believed to be accidental. REEFTON, March 14. Nothing is known here as to the rumor in circulation that Mr B. Beeves, M.ELB. for Inangahua, contemplated resigning. HOKITIKA, March 14. A fatal accident occurred at Goldsborough this morning. The wife of Edward McCormick, miner, went into a shed to milk a cow. The children discovered her a few minutes efterwards and saw her in a sitting position motionless. They gave an alarm, and it was found she was quite dead, having apparently been kicked on the temple by a cow. The Bank of New Zealand shipped 22500z of gold bullion, valued at £9000. The miners are well supplied with water. The gale has moderated. DUNEDrN, March 14. Tbe University Council have elected Dr. Maunsell lecturer on Surgery for three years at £150. INVERCARGILL, March 14. Advice from Lumsden, fifty miles north of Invercargill, reports sixteen hours' rain and a heavy fall of snow. The rivers are in flood, carrying away quantities of grain, while part of the railway is washed away near Parrawa. It is feared great damage will be done to the crops in stook.
