THE RESIGNATION OF THE BISHOP.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —The whole Church in New Zealand is expecting the resignation of the esteemed Bishop of Christchurch. It is now so long since he first announced his intention of resigning—over eighteen months— that it is felt it cannot now be delayed longer than is convenient to his Lordship. Meanwhile the diocese is disordered, clergy and laity alike being in a state of expectancy, and discussing the probable personnel of his successor, and the time of his advent. It would greatly tend to the quiet and assurance of the diocese if his Lordship would now announce publicly the date when his resignation will take effect. Uncertainty cannot fail to injure the diocese, and this result, I am sure, is far from his Lordship's desire. The announcement of the exact date of his resignation, and the steps necessary to secure a successor, would be of immense advantage to the Church in this diocese. —Yours, &c., Churchman. March 7th, 1839.
