THE CHIEF COMMISSIONER OF RAILWAYS.
A deputation, consisting of Mr J. Joyce, M.H.R.. Mr S. R. Webb, Mayor of Lyttelton, Captain McLellan, and Captain McClatchie, representative in Lyttelton of the Harbor Board, together with the licensed porters of Lyttelton, waited on Mr J. McKerrow, the Chief Commissioner of Railways, at the Christchurch railway station yesterday morning, with regard to the order that had been issued by the Board doiug away with the licensed porters. After the deputation had opened the subject, the Chief Commissioner explained that at many of the stations in the colony the licensed porters had been exceeding their proper limits, interfering with the Government officials, and aggravating the public. This, however, was not She case at Lyttelton, as favorable reports had always been received of the licensed porters. It had been decided incousequenceof reasons given to do away with all licensed porters, and hence the circular that had been sent to Lyttelton. Before the Board could make an exception in the case of this station the matter would have to be considered. Mr Joyce also brought under the notice of Mr McKerrow the question of train fares to Lyttelton and intermediate stations, and also asked for concessions on the season tickets to young people who travelled from Lyttelton to Christchurch to learn trades. With regard to the first matter, the Commissioner informed the deputation he could see the absurdities in the existing scale of fares, and promised that it would be considered, and he also said the question of concessions would be looked into, as he recognised that Lyttelton was practically a suDurb of Christchurch.
