PRESENTATION TO LADY JERVOIS.
Lady Jervois bade farewell to the mem* bers and associates of the Girls' Friendly Society on Saturday afternoon, on the occasion of their summer festival. Her . Ladyship delivered her valedictory address in St. Paul's schoolroom, Tinakori road, and gave the members much-useful advice as to what should be their aims and objects. Members of such societies else, where were, she said, doing good by collecting subscriptions towards works of charity, by getting together newcandidates for membership, and she had also known of one instance of the starting, by their own exertions, of a new branch* of the Society in a town in which they went to live. Lady Jervois concluded by urging, as her parting request, that all present should try to make their membership a reality in their lives, and not a mere name. A vote of thanks was passed to Lady Jervois on the motion of Mrs FitzGerald, who also, on behalf of the Society, presented her Ladyship with an illuminated address, signed by nearly all the members and associates, expressing their regret at her departure, and wishing her every happiness when she would be so far away from them. The address was in book form, bound in dark maroon Russian leather. On the front cover was a china plague, on which a bunch of rata blossoms was artistically painted by Mrs Stowe, and the text of the address was engrossed and illuminated by Mr Koch. The members also presented Lady Jervois with a fine water-color painting of "The Seaward Ranges, Kaikoura Mountains," by the late Mr John Gully.
