MANDEVILLE LICENSING ELECTION.
For two years past there has not been much interest shown in the Mandeville and Rangiora Licensing Committee election, but on Wednesday- the Moderate Party had got an idea that the Temperance Party proposed to elect a Committee which would close all the hotels. The hocels of the district are two—one at Woodend, the other at Southbrook—at least three miles apart, and abont the same distance from any other licensed houses. The Temperance Party had also gained the impression that as the last local option polling affirmed the increasing of licensed houses, the election of a certain Committee would mean the granting of a license to the Royal Hotel at Woodend, which a temperance party had closed some years ago. These ideas gave both sides a determination co fight the election out. Four candidates, namely, Messrs Harrison, Watson, Wallace and Smith, were put in nomination by the temperance party,. and four opponents by the other side. During the day men were brought up from the harvest fields, as well as other occupations, by vehicles retained in the service of the respective sides. At least half of the electors of the district voted and special facilities were given by having four polling places, the principal being presided over by Mr Templar, at Rangiora. The votes received were: — Ran- Fern- Wood- Kaiagiora side end poi TL Geo.J. Leach .. 48 Iβ 54 22 140 Fredk. Horrell .. 48 12 55 24 .139 J. C. Andrews .. 48 12 53 24 137 N.
