Four Chinamen were arrested to night on a charge of mutilating a cow, which it. is supposed strayed into their market gardens at Kingsland. A public meeting in connection with the Congregational Union was held at Beresford street Church this evening, when Mr J. W. Jago, of uunedin, delivered an address in reference to the spread of Congregationalism in the colony. AUCKLAND, This Day.

Jane French, v> ho was sent to prison on Saturday for drunkenness, died oa Monday. At the inquest yesterday a verdict of «• Died from apoplexy " was returned. Akroyd, Baldwin's agent, has returned from Sydney. Baldwin was unable to give an exhibition on account of windy weather. The engagement with Akroyd is cancelled. Williams, a Sydney watchmaker and parachutist, contemplates going on exhibition in New Zealand.

James Chalcroft was committed for trial, charged with setting fire to a stack of oaten hay on the 16th instant. The prisoner had threatened to roast out the owner of the stack, and on the night of the fire was seen running away from the vicinity while the stack was burning GISBOBNE, Febrnary27.

An eight-roomed house at Tangibanga, twelve miles from Gisborne, was burnt down yesterday at mid-day. The family were not residing in the house owing to Te Kooti's visit, but four men had slept there the previous night and had cooked breakfast, and left to go out on the run at nine. The inquiry into the charges made against Judge Bawson will commence at New Plymouth, on Monday next. Mr Henry D. Crawford, son of J. C. Crswford, formerly B.M. here, was married to-day to Mies Ellen Pearce, second daughter of Mr Edward Pearce, merchant. The ceremony, which took place at St. Peter's, was witnessed by 1000 persona. The presents were numerous and valuable.
