CODLIN MOTH SCARE.

In consequence of a report which appeared in the Lyttelton Times of Monday, some alarm has been created among the fruit growers of Canterbury at a distinct statement that the codlin moth had appeared as Rangiora, and that an experienced nurseryman there had given a positive opinion on the > question. Mr M. Murphy, on behalf of the'fruit' growers, proceeded to investigate the matter, leaving town by last evenings train, and returning yesterday morning, having met and discussed the matter with our reporter last evening. Mr Mubphy said—You know I am in a position to judge. I have here the grab of the moth, which I obtained from apple trees in Tasmania, and I know it perfectly. I shall stay with the Mayor of Rangiora, and he will show mc around. It's a more serious matter than people may think, if this codlin moth gets ahead. I cannot believe it Is here, but If it is some steps must be taken to stamp it out. Yesterday morning our reporter saw Mr Murphy returning to town, when the following brief interview took place:— Reporter—Was it the moth ?

Mr Murphy—Emphatically no. We learn that the supposed caterpillar or the codlin moth was first noticed in the orchard of Mr Keast, and suosequentiy Mr Good's apples were seen to be infected. Mr Murphy, after a very minute and careful examination, came to the conclusion' that it was not a codlin moth grub, and assured those interested that it was totally different from the dreaded pest. In town Mr Murphy has been able toreassure the fruit growers.'
