ELLESMERE ROAD BOARD.

The meeting of the EUesmere Road Board was held in the office, Lees ton, on February let, 1889. Present—Messrs J. Rennie (Chairman), B. Lockhead and G. C. Waby. Messrs G. F. Smith and A. H. Gardiner applied for a new bridge over Wedderburn stream, as the old structure was unsafe for traffic. The Overseer to inspect, and if found to be as reported by Mr Smith, to be renewed. Mr Longstaff applied to have the shingle spread on the Tramway road that had been taken out of the drain. Agreed to be done after harvest. Correspondence was read from— J. B. Campbell; asking for four months' leave of absence, as he was abont to visit the old country. Granted to end of term. Messrs C. Sanderson and J. Stackhouse, trustees in the estate of A. AUen, appointing Crispin Sanderson to exercise the privilege of voting at elections for the property. Memo, from the Property Tax Department, advising the payment of £122 12s7d, 75 per cent, subsidy due to the Board. Circular from the Public Works office, requesting that correspondence for the future Id connection with roads and public works be addressed to the Minister of Lands. Letters from the Bakaia Road Board informing the Board that they decided to adopt the recommendations for dealing with the watercourse on the Boundary road from Selwyn to Dunsandel as agreed upon by the representatives of the two Boards on the 20th ult., and the work to be put In hand as soon as possible. From Mr Thos. Brooks, on behalf of the trustees of the Wesleyan Church, Brookside. for permission to erect a hor->.e hand rail in front of church, Brookside. Granted. From the Charitable Aid Board, enclosing a list of cases in receipt of relief at the commencement of the year. From the Secretary New Zealand Exhibition Committee, enclosing subscription list and asking the Board to assist in this important undertaking. From Mr ~W. Boatr, enclosing cheque for gorse grubbing on the r-.ads opposite his land, and complaininj of the measurement, and a'so that his fences had been burned. The Overseer tb check the measurement and meet Mr Boag wl h regard to the fences. From Mr F. Overton, asking the Board to open the outlet to the main drain, and also to put a few Inads of shingle on the Lower Lake road. Agreed to scoop the shingle out of the drain and repair the road when convenient. From J. Coe asking permission to pnt a gate on the Lower Lake road. Permission granted if no objection is raised by thote using the road, and the gate to be erected in compliance with section 109 Road Boards Act. 1882. Petition from Mr H. C. Chappell and others, asking for formation for about forty chatne on Hight'e road. To be undertaken when funds are available. Mr W. McVinnle waited on the Board about hi* goree which the Board had cleared off the road opposite his land, and complained of being over-charged. The Board could make no deduction. Mr Geo. C. Waby presented a petition from a number of ratepayers asking the -Bonrd to divide the district into wards. The petition was received, but as the number of signatures are Insufficient the Board cannot do anything in the matter, being fifty lees than half the ratepayers, the number required being- two-thirds. A •tatement of the transactions of the Leesbon Public Pound, together with the Poundkeeper'e books for the past twelve months, was before the Board, and Mr Jas. Carston was appointed Poundkeeper for the current year. The Overseer's report was read and considered, and the paysbeet, amounting to £80 14s lid, -n as passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
