THE SCENE ON THE ISLAND.

The news that a prisoner had been killed on the island by a fellow prisoner spread with rapidity, and those prisoners who were working near the scene rushed On to the walls of tlie fort in _ slate of great excitement.. They were, however, soon quietened by the guards, and returned to their work again. Fortunately the launch was over at the works, and Cody Was at once taken on board aud brought to Lyttelton. The signalling system as laid out by Mr O'Brien when in charge of the gaol was found of very great service, for as soon as the condition of the prisoner Cody was known tbe signal for the surgeon WAS run up at the island flagstaff, and answered from the Harbor Board', port station, and Dr. Fits-Henry, the gaol surgeon, was then able to attend to tha unfortunate man as soon as he was brought to the landing step 3. THE VICTIM. Prisoner William Cody, the victim of the outrage, was an elderly man. He was not particularly robust, though of a fair average build. When he was examined by Dr. FitzHehry at the wharf, the doctor, after his investigation, was thoroughly satisfied that the unfortunate man could not recover from the fearful wounds which had been inflicted. There was one on the left temple, and the other three were on tbe top of the skull, the upper portion of which was completely smashed down on tbe base, while a portion of the brain was protruding. All the care and attention possible was taken of him in the gaol, but at -.40 he died from his injuries.
