EXPLANATION.

TO THE EDI-OB OF THB PBESS. Sir,—Will you kindly allow mc space ia your most valuable paper to correct a mistake which appears In your last Monday's issue concerning the trotting matches at Oxford, between Mr Parlane's Sawdust and Mr Hawkins' Petter, which read as follows:—" A trotting match came off at Oxford on Friday last between Mr Parlane's Sawdust and Mr Hawkins* Fetter for £5 ; distance about one mile, from the Terminus Hotel to Pariah's corner. This was won by Sawdust. The owners not being satisfied, another match was arranged for £10, from Hawkins' Hotel to Mr Moody's, which was won by Petter." Now as far as the distances and placing of the winners are concerned is quite correct, but there is something wrong about the figures. In the first match the stake, instead of being £o was only £1, and in the second one instead of being £10 it was just 10s. Now I have no doubt the former figures may look better to the eyes of racing men, but believe mc, Mr Editor, the latter ones are more commonly used by tbe racing men of Oxford. —Yours, See., - None of ths Swim.
